Hi; as a newbie i am interested in the eq settings and wonder if there is anywhere on the web or in the ipod literature that either gives you a visual indication of the eq settings or for the slightly more technically minded if the eq setting frequencies and db increases and reductions are set out. In the Uk for example 'loudness' increases both bass and treble in a 'smile' layout; whereas i think in other places 'loudness' can just mean a bass boost; so it would be good to see or be able to work out what for example 'piano ' does
sony as ever on their mini disc player give you a visual display

I had always assumed that they were identical to the equivalent equlaiser settings in iTunes. That is, you can see the individual frequency boosts/reductions in iTunes' equaliser window.
In the Uk for example 'loudness' increases both bass and treble in a 'smile' layout;
In iTunes, this is not the case, so - based on the above assumption - the iPod eq setting will not be either. I would tend to think that different companies use the same names for different settings (e.g. Sony's 'loudness' eq setting may be different from Apple's, and both may be different from Creative's, etc.)

No. Loudness is supposed to boost the volume following the 'equal loudness contour', which changes depending on dB, and is NOT a simple smiley curve.
Here is a graph of equal loudness contours:

For an article on it, see Equal Loudness Contour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equal-loudness_contours)

Does that still hold true if the system volume on your Mac remains constant, and you adjust overall volume through an external source? (such as an integrated amplifier)
I would guess that you need to adjust volume from within iTunes itself to take advantage of the variable loudness contour, but that's just a guess.

In iTunes: View--> Show Equalizer. I'm not fond of iTunes 7 because there isn't a hotkey for the EQ. It used to be 2 (apple 2) would show EQ.
So this is what your EQ represents on your iPod...

Right...there was no longer a shortcut in iTunes 7.
Then everyone, and I mean everyone, complained.
So Apple relented, but since they wanted Command-2 to be 2x size for video playback, they gave us back Command-Opt-2 for Equalizer (and Command-Opt-1 for Main Window). They're listed on the Window and View menus, if you've updated.
The shortcuts returned after 7.0 but before this week's 7.1, 'cause I've been using the shortcuts for weeks now.
SomaFM! Cool station, send them money. I did.

Are you sure you didn't set that up manually in Keyboard Shortcuts? I did that after 7.0 was released, so I wouldn't be able to tell you if Apple added it back in. It would have overlapped the preference I set.

Yes, I did not set up those those shortcuts. I think I learned about them from the Apple forum. If anyone else reading this doesn't see those shortcuts in iTunes 7.1, they should post, but I'm pretty sure everyone's going to see the same thing I do.
