Keep iPod from syncing

Occasionally I want to put the iPod in the charger and NOT have it automatically sync (usually because I just synced it). Is there a control key that I can hold down to do this as I cradle the iPod? In the same vein, if the iPod has been charging in the cradle, how can I get it to start a sync without uncradling and recradling the iPod??

ok what you have to do is plug in ur ipod. then change around ipod settings so that it doesn't update automatically. instead click on manually update or something like that.
