hello all,

So here is my situation and what I want to do. Currently i'm syncing my latest gen ipod to my g5. However situations in life are changing, and I want to have it sync with my ibook to with music files on an external drive. now I realize I could just set it to manually manage my music without any issues, as far as i know at least. However, I like rating my songs on the ipod, and having the plays on the ipod add up in itunes. I just like them identical or something. and i want to keep all my current ratings and play counts on both the ipod and have them transfer over to my ibook. maybe i'm a statistics junkie, not sure but thats another topic.

so here is what i was thinking of doing. hook my external up to the g5, change location of library to a place on the external, consolidate the library, in turn transfering everything over to it that i will use on the ipod(music and video wise that is). and then copying my itunes library file, album artwork folder, ipod games folder, itunes music library.xml file and ipod game library over to the ibook and in turn replace those files on the ibook.

I figured then when i hooked my external up to my ibook, and fired up itunes, it would see my original library from the g5, as well as still knowing where the files are located given that i'm assuming the mountpoint should be the same on both g5 and ibook (/volumes/firewiredrive). and also when i hooked the ipod up to my ibook, that it would still have the same settings and all to sync with said library without losing my hundreds of playcounts, playlists, ratings and whatever.

Then again, maybe doing this isn't so simple, and there is more to it then i can figure out. i'm just looking for general critique, saying im an idiot and wrong, or right. or perhaps someone with a proper method of doing this if this isn't of course right.

anyway, thanks for reading through my incredibly lengthy post, apologies for my inconciseness. and hope someone can lend a little advice.

regards,
stanley
