I have Mac OS X Server 10.1 - just installed it from the 10.1 upgrade CD.
My situation is this:
At work, we are, by court order, banned from accessing the internet. It is a long story, but the problem (as it relates to updates) is that I cannot use the built in Software Update.
We can bring in files on CD to work, just can't access the internet directly. So, I downloaded the Security Update, and the Installer Update, installed them, and then tried to install the 10.1.2 update that I also downloaded.
All the disks are dimmed, so I cannot select the disk with 10.1 installed to apply the update.
There is no 10.1.1 update that can be downloaded, as far as I can find.
I do not know what the problem is at this point. Anybody got any ideas?

Clone the install onto another drive and install from another location. Or - pop the drive and toss it into another machine. Then update from another location.

No can do.
Court order specifically addresses that issue.
We can not take a machine or a drive and "expose it" to the internet. I know it does not make much sense, but those are the rules. Don't like them, but to violate any rule could make the ban last longer. Predictions are bad for how long it will last now.

Then I would try a firewire drive hooked to the machine you are downloading to from offsite - or just install your server on a laptop, update and clone back to your server machine.
Good luck, your problem sounds quite bizarre.

The update applied to my OS X Server (in order):
WebObjects 5 Deployment - update 3
IE 5.1 Security Update
Security Update 10-19-01
Installer Update
Mac OS X Update Combined - 10.1.2
iTunes 2.0.3
Mac OS X Server 10.1.2 Update
It looks like maybe you need to get the Combined 10.1.2 Update that bypasses 10.1.1 altogether.

So Craig,
You are saying it will not hurt to apply the combined Mac OS X 10.1.2 CLIENT update to the 10.1 Server? As long as you apply the 10.1.2 Server update after that?
If that is the case, I will give it try. Thanks for the info.

As far as I can tell, thats always been the process; first upgrade Mac OS X, then upgrade the server components afterwords.
The implication being, of course, that besides the extra bundled apps and the license code the actual difference between server and client is not that huge, much like NT Workstation and NT Server.
I'm sure that configuration files have different settings for Server, too, but they must not get replaced in the update process for this to work.

hey,
there is a combined 10.1.2 SERVER update, i just installed one on friday on a server than was just running 10.1. so there is a SERVER 10.1.2 combined. hope this helps. this does beg the question about updating an Mac box without an internet connection (reguardless of your court ordered situation).

Where did you find the combined 10.1.2 SERVER update.
I have looked all over the Apple site, and looked for references on several others and cannot find it.
And I thought I could find anything :)

hey,
i guess i should have taken a screen cap, but didnt think of it at the time. but it was just there. it had been a while since i had touched the server. all it had was the 10.1 full install. then when i went to work on the server last friday Software Update poped up and it had the 10.1.2 Combined Update. i dont know were to find it on Apple's site, sorry. i just know it was the combined update. do you have AppleCare for the box? if you do not i suggest paying for it. b/c that would enable you to call apple about the combined server updater (among other things). cant really offer any more help, sorry.

To take my 10.1 server to 10.1.2, I applied in order:
1- IE5SecUpdate
2- SecUpdate
3- InstallerUpdate
4- MacOSXUpdate-10.1.1
5- MacOSXServerUpdate10.1.1
6- MacOSXUpdate10.1.2
7- MacOSXServerUpdate10.1.2
8- (optional) Airport 2.01 update
It works...
Please note: you *may* be able to jump from 10.1 to 10.1.2 (NON-SERVER, using the "combo" 10.1.2 update), and then apply the 10.1.1 and 10.1.2 SERVER updates, but I can't guarantee since I did't try...

I upgraded today (using Software Update) from Server 10.1 to 10.1.2 with just these:
1- IE5SecUpdate
2- InstallerUpdate
3- MacOSXCombinedUpdate-10.1.2
4- MacOSXServerUpdate-10.1.2
So far all seems fine and configured as before...

Thanks everyone,
I thought I would let everyone know that I was able to get the server updated doing the following:
1- SecUpdate
2- InstallerUpdate
3- MacOSXCombinedUpdate-10.1.2
4- MacOSXServerUpdate-10.1.2
That was a week ago, and all worked well - and then, without warning, we were allowed access the internet again - as of today!
We all hope it lasts.
Thanks again for your postings, they really helped me out.
