My MacBook Pro will not recognize any blank media. This was working perfectly, and I even burned 3 DVDs over the past week.

I now get the following message everytime I insert new blank media:

"This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized."

I have tried many different discs and I have tried 3 different types of mediaa, all from batches that were previously working with this machine. Including DVD+R DL, DVD+R (from two different manufactures), and CD-R. I recieve the same error message (listed above) for all the media.

I can play media that I have burned, and I can play purchased DVDs and CDs. I can also play media burned on other computers.

In the time between the last sucessfully burned DVD, and the first "failed" disc there was a time of a couple of hours.

Here is some information on my setup from the System Profiler:

The system profiler actually shows correctly the inserted media, even though the rest of the system does not to recognize it.

I've already tried some of the "simple" things like repairing disc permissions.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

I have a Western Digital MyBook. WD installed some file which caused this error. I removed the file, rebooted my system, and now it works.

See this thread in Apple Support for more details.

What burn App are you using?

I am using SimplyBurns rev271

However the message occurs when I insert blank media, before I start any disc burning program. Burning from "Disk Utility" also fails with the same message.

I get the message once I insert a blank media, and click "OK" when the message "You inserted a blank DVD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click Ignore."

The Action I take is "Open Finder"

Once I click OK, I get the error messge. "This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized."

Before this problem, I would get a finder window showing that there is blank media (and specifying either DVD+R, or CD-R, or whatever media I inserted)

You don't by chance have a Western Digital MyBook external drive as well? Its drivers apparently conflict with the SuperDrive and result in the message you're seeing:

Is any blank disk recognized if you login as a different user?

Do you have another computer where these discs work? If so it maybe that the drive has gone bad.

If it is under warranty, take it back into Apple and let them take a look at it. It is possible the the drive is bad.

Thank you macosnoob. I do have a WD MyBook. I followed these instructions in the post

I then tried one file at a time and found that in the <volume>/library/LaunchDaemons folder, there was a file called com.WD.WDDriveServices.plist. This file references a file in the /usr/bin directory called WDDrvSvc. When I removed the file in the LauchDaemons folder and rebooted, all is well. I can mount media again.

My system is working now. I can burn all media.

Thank you again for your help

I got WD MyBook PRO 1.5 TB drive about 1 week ago. I have G5 (powerPC model) I don't know if installing WD and its drivers is the issue of my blank disks not being recognised (I got the message when I would insert the drive: This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized.) When I read this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4343400 I decided to do the following and it worked:

1. removed file in /library/LaunchDaemons/ : com.WD.WDDriveServices.plist., and emptied the thrash
2. restarted computer
3. in disk utilities repaired disk permissions on my start-up disk
4. tried to put in the same blank disk and this time it was recognized.

Problem resolved! Hope this helps :p
