View Full Version : My "new" apple monitor

I was given an older "Apple Cinema Display" monitor.

I can get it hooked up my older PPC G4 tower, but it never turns on.

My brother took this same monitor to the local Apple Store, but they just laughed him out of there, when he asked if they could check it out.

The PPC G4 has "a" DVI connector on the video card (yes it works with a standard monitor), but I can never get the ACD to fully power up.

I hope this all make sense.

Any other tips/suggestions?

Thanks

Are you sure the display has a DVI connector? The old Cinema displays had ADC connectors. Post the exact model here.

you have to buy a 150 dollar adapter to convert DVI to ADC since ADC also runs both power and USB through the connection.

I am really glad ADC died, what a dumb technology.

Can you give link or part # for this?

From what I can see on the back of the Display;

Apple Cinema Display
Apple Computer Inc., Cupertino CA 95014
1999 Apple Computers Inc.
Assembled in Korea, Family Number 5662, rated 16V

There is a bar code, which I am assuming is the serial #.

See if you can locate it in Mactracker. (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/5968) It looks like it could have either or both connectors.

Here are some links. I don't think apple actually sells them anymore so you may have to get third party.

Mactracker shows that the 1999 model Cinema Display had a DVI connector, and that the models produced after July 2000 came with ADC connectors. Sounds like yours is one with DVI. Does your Cinema Display have a power cable that is separate from the DVI cable?

Yes. The power cable/adapter is separate. The adapter is a round shape.

There are 3 connectors out the back of the Monitor. USB, DVI, and round (power cable that attaches to the power adapter).

Unfortunately, the position of the location of both preclude me from getting clear digital pics.

Not sure I understand what you mean by this. The position of the location of what? You should be able to connect the DVI port of the Cinema Display to the DVI port of the G4's video card with a DVI cable. I'm pretty sure that you can also use a standard PC power supply cable to attach the monitor to an AC outlet.

My monitor Update.

I moved, both the monitor & computer, so I could see the rear & connectors.

The apple has this female of this connector;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:DVI_Connector.jpg

The monitor has the male of this connector is similar, but missing the middle 2 sets of pins (3 pins, 2 blank, & 3 pins).

From about this computer;
Video Card:
Chipset ATY, RADEON
TYPE DISPLAY
BUS AGP
SLOT SLOT-A
VRAM 32 meg
VENDOR ATI (0x1002)
DEVICE 0x5144
ROM REV 113-7409-119

The computer works just fine with a plain jane vga/svga monitor. I'd really like to get it working with the Apple Display.

does your video card support a dual-link dvi? that might be one thing to look at.

I often reference this page when looking at the cables:
http://www.pacificcable.com/DVI_Tutorial.htm

Which one of those is your monitor cable, and which is you card?

according to the link you sent, I have;

monitor -> DVI-D Male Single-Link

apple/video card -> DVI-I Female Dual-Link

Do you know for sure that the display was working before you got it? Maybe there's a good reason someone just gave it to you.... :)

Does your Cinema Display do anything at all? You should be able to plug into the power supply, and push the power button on the front. You should get a light on that power button - even briefly. If the button is flashing in a sequence of 3 short flashes, then you have the wrong type video input connected. If it flashes with 2 short flashes, then a longer one - you have a problem with the backlight in the display.

No idea, which is probably why it was given away.

When plugged in, the power button shows yellow, but no amount of coaxing will get it to do anything. It just stay a solid yellow.

So with that said, I'm going to assume that the display is toast?

Just spoke with my brother, and he was told it did work. So now I have not a clue what to try next.

Well, that used to be a really nice display. You could try it on another computer (would not have to be a Mac, but any with a DVI port), to make sure there's not a problem with the vid card on your Mac.
Or, you could take it to an Apple specialist, if you have one in your area (not an Apple store, but an independent shop, if you have one local to you). There you should be able to get a possible fix...

how do you mean, laughed him out of there? if you explain to them that you can't get it working, i'm sure they would connect it to one of their demo macs. if not, go onto ebay, and get a dvi-vga adapter, only a couple of quid, and plug it into a pc.

I have an appt., with the semi-local Apple Store on Tuesday, so we shall see.

Many thanks

Went to the Apple store, and the monitor appeared to be in a permanent SLEEP state. Since the monitor was over 5 years old, not worth the money to fix :-(

Thanks to all
