I just read a story on the BBC News site which describes how captchas* are being put to good use in helping digitise scanned books:

Essentially, a scanned word that cannot be understood by OCR is presented as a captcha, with the result being used as the digitised word.
I wanted to suggest that MacOSXHints subscribe to the system -- for the greater good :D

* A captcha is obfuscated text designed to prevent bots from accessing services and/or web pages. For example, this site uses it when people who are not logged in search the forums.
