turning 4th gen ipod in hdd

i have an old 4th gen ipod which i accidently smashed the screen on and so brought a replacement and decided to turn the old one into a plain 20GB hard drive.

So i have formatted the ipod using disk utility and works fine until i reconnect to my macbook and then itunes automatically reformats it as an ipod and tries to sync with itunes!

So how can i stop itunes doing this? or will i just have to put up with it?
