I was wondering if anyone knew what these errors on this 30gb ipod photo were and if anyone knows how to fix them?

I had the same problems with my 40GB 4th gen... It couldn't start-up (sad-mac face), couldn't charge it (battery seems to be stuck at 1/4, even after hours), couldn't be mounted on any mac (or pc) by iTunes and didn't show up in my System profiler... Of course, my Applecare was over by just few months... So my only solution was to buy a new one (sight) and use this one as a nice (but expensive) paper weight... :(

Ya I am trying to avoid just letting the ipod just sit around.
Is there any way to force it to mount and then reformat it?
My Applecare is well over... but does anyone think that if I took it into an Apple store they could do something with it (reformat, load software back onto it)?

Actually, that would be very interesting to know. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything (web/google/forums)... :(
The problem (or part of it), is that iTunes can't see the iPod. So neither can the Finder (even in Terminal). Therefore, I just can't think of a way to restore the iPod firmware without iTunes... On your computer or any computer for that matter... At some point, I even open mine () to see if I could connect/plug/unplug/switch something... with no luck... :(
On older models, you could use a software which wasn't tied-in with iTunes (therefore maybe by-passing the iTunes-iPod recognition scheme) but it doesn't work on newer model...

Ah-Ha!! someone with the same problem I had! My ipod has been doing this for at least the past year now... it's the same model to.. If you're ready to open your ipod what i did was push the hard drive into the socket and vollia it works. If you're not then sell it to Buy My Broken iPod (http://www.buymybrokenipod.com) I got about 60 dollars for mine.

Try putting it into disk mode to let the unit charge. You'll get that battery icon when the unit is plugged into USB on a computer, and the unit is dead. Plug it into a charger, not a computer, let the battery charge for at least 15 minutes, then see where it takes you with your computer.
Hold the center button and the play button together when you first turn it on (while plugged into charger)

Thank you for your suggestion! I was about ready to start using my non-functional iPod as a coaster. I tried your suggestion. The plug was not completely seated on the hard drive. After pushing the plug the rest of the way onto the connection - it worked! Thanks again.

the sad ipod face ussuallly means theres a hard drive error. do a reset (Menu+Center Button) then when booting up hold down Previous Button and Center Button. that should get you into the Ipod diagnostics. from there run all tests that have to do with the Hard Drive and the iPod Itself. this should fix any disk errors, and if you still have the sad ipod face when rebooting. then the hard drive has serious damage. go to ipodmods.com and follow their instructions. their diagnostics are free. and if they find a problem you can tell them what to do with it. even upgrade that 40gb hard drive to bad ass 60 gb.
