View Full Version : The Perfect Dock(IMHO)

Well, this is my idea of the perfect dock:

- Full customization(Skins, poofs, etc...)
- Expandable to reach one side of the screen to the other.(i.e. I want to be able to make the dock as SMALL as it can be made, and turn on slight magnification. But when the dock is as small as it can be, I still want it to take up the full length/height of the side of the screen it is on. Like I want it to be able to cover the complete bottom part of the screen, even when it is microscopic).
- Line dividers, so I can seperate my applications.
- Folder support on the application side of the dock.
- I don't know if this is a dock feature or a Finder one, but I would like to be able to control-click on the Finder icon in the dock and have a contextual menu pop up and give at least these options: "New Finder Window" "Relaunch(AKA quit)" and maybe a "Hide Others" option.
- And of course, Multi-Dock support. One on the right, left and bottom. That'd be awesome!(But if you had full customization of the dock and line dividers, I think I would be pretty much satisfied!)

Again, this is just my idea of the perfect dock. Feel free to tell me if something isn't possible, or if you have a better suggestion than mine.

My idea of the perfect Dock (i.e., the only improvement I could imagine over leaving it as it is: totally disabled and not running) would be if it had the option of running as a background-only app (does not exist on desktop at all in any shape size format or location) AND had the option of disabling application switching. Under those circumstances, I would return it to Core Services and let it run, so that I could use that WindowShade hack that makes the minimize buttons in your windows work like the WindowShade buttons in MacOS 8 and 9. (Without the Dock, the buttons are disabled, and therefore don't function for the WindowShade hack either).

Can't think what else I'd ever use the Dock for. I kept it in case I ever wanted to launch it, just removing it from Core Services so I could be without it except when I specifically wanted it. I have yet to launch it except once to make sure it would run if I did.

This link will show you how to add a quit item in the contextual menu for the finder icon in the dock...
