Hey folks not sure if anyone else has
seen this yet or if I am just missing something.
If I leave my machine for a few minutes the screen dims then it goes off.
and after a while it goes to sleep. I am running on power not battery I would only expect this to happen if I am on Battery. The energy saver settings have been changed to custom to never put the machine to sleep and to only put the display to sleep after 3 hours. I have also de-selected the Dim display before putting it to sleep option.
Any ideas is this happening to anyone else?

ok that seems to work
I set the energy saver stuff to Best Performance and then set the other bits like do not reduce display brightness and the put display to sleep after 3 hours etc.
So far so good.

seems to work fine if you slide the put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for "never" that seems to have solved mine
I have the good old Mac will not always come out of sleep / hibernation thing going on. its been an issue sine 10.5.0 still a problem in 10.5.1 Well it does come out of sleep but sometimes it just takes 2 or 3 minutes
Will try all the usual suggestions.

After installing Leopard, my system goes into a partial sleep mode and it won't wake from it. I need to hold the power button to restart. Before I loaded Leopard, I backed up the Tiger OS onto an external drive. If I boot Tiger from the external drive, the sleep problem is gone. Boot from Leopard, and the sleep problem returns. I reset the PRAM and VNRAM with no success in resolving the problem.

Could you post the System log at the point when your system goes to sleep and attempts to wake?

Since installing Leopard, I can't open the energy saver window of the system preferences so my 17" iMac G4 1.25 GHz 768 MB goes to sleep after just a minute of nonuse. All the other system preference windows are OK. I've reinstalled 10.5.1, trashed the .plist in systempreferences. In the console I find the following each time I click on the energy saver icon in system preferences:
11/26/07 12:59:34 PM System Preferences1264 *** -NSCFString unsignedIntValue: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0xa0a2a6b4
So far, no one in the Apple discussion support site has been able to help. Thanks for any suggestions.

both my Macbook Pro and a PowerBook running 10.5.1 have sleep issues.
next time it happens i will post the logs
I have noticed that when it does go to sleep both machines can take upto 3 or 4 minutes to actually come out of sleep mode.

i think the sleep issue has something to do with it connecting to a network

Yes I had the 'sleep' problem after upgrading my MacBook to Leopard. I don't know if I had used Insomniax screwed things up or not but...
Each time I told the MacBook to Shutdown it would got through the procedure of shutting down but after closing the lid the LED at the front would blink and I can't wake it or power it up. The only way of getting it to turn on was to hold down the power button for 5+ secs (you can then hear it die a death) and then power it up again... When I close the lid without shutting down it would go into 'never waking sleep'...
I solved it by reading some advice from the Apple forums:
Shut the MacBook down. Remove power and the battery. Hold down the power button for 5+ secs. Power it up again.
This should fix the problem, but it didn't for me. So back to Insomniax, I removed that and then tried the procedure again, and so far it has worked :)
BTW, since upgrading the Leopard. Sleep now goes into hibernation - a la Windows. Is this right?

I spoke too soon... I just shutdown my MacBook and closed the lid. The light blinked at the front and... I couldn't power it up again unless I hold the power button down for 5+ secs...

This might be the cause of the sleep problems. Found this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5537102
which suggest using:
sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
at the command line to fix the problem. This seems to be solving my 'shutdown but sleep and never wake or boot up' problem, ATM.

by doing this does the machine still go into sleep mode at all?

Yes it does - it goes to sleep in the normal way - not the 'hibernate' way.

nope does not work for me. If the sleep is a short one 30 minutes or a bit more its fine however if the system sleeps over night. and i open the lid i hear the fans spin up the caps lock and num lock lights light up if I press the relevant keys. but thats where it stops. It does finally come up about 2 or 3 minutes later if I'm lucky. the other thing is after extended sleep the touch pad / mouse pointer on the screen becomes jerky. like the acceleration is almost random. if you move the pointer slowly (very slowly) you can do fine movements if you move the pointer at normal speed it almost jumps all over the place. if I plug in my old USB mighty mouse its back to normal or if I do a reboot and use the touch pad again its fine until the next long sleep

Have you looked at your System log to see what's going on during these slow wakes?

I'm still having shutdown/sleep/never wake problems with my MacBook (Pro)... sometimes it shuts down properly, other times it goes into sleep and never wake again... I just have to find out what is doing this..
I got a feeling that if programs are still running and I tell the MacBook to shutdown it will go into the sleep and never wake state... dunno...

It looks like it might be related how long the laptop has been on...
If I don't find out what is causing this and find a fix then I might have to install Leopard afresh (i.e. wipe and install) rather than upgrading...

from what I have seen its definitely time related the longer it sleeps the longer it takes to wake. I have never had to power my MBP off. it has always woken up so to speak but some times its taken up to 5 minutes from opening the lid to getting a login prompt.

Again… What does the System Log say about the time period during wake up?

well my machine has hardly been in sleep mode over the last 2 or 3 days when it happens again I will post the log

It looks like Appletalk is having difficulty starting up. In most cases, it's just not necessary! Try turning it off in Network preferences -> Built-in Ethernet -> Appletalk. Unless you have OS 9 or earlier systems or old Appletalk printers through Ethertalk adapters, you don't need it.

I was still having shutdown/sleep/wake up problems with my upgraded MacBook (Pro) and now it's gotten worse... It now goes into the non-wake-up sleep mode on shutdown almost everytime...
Anyone got a solution for this... I think I will have to scrub the MacBook and do a fresh Leopard install, rather than the upgrade...

I uninstalled vmware fusion and I have only had the sleep issue once in the last 3 or 4 days.
however what I did not as I suspected that it was a network related issue was on the base station I enabled a welcome message. that just says "welcome to the network" the one time that it did have a sleep issue it took about 4 minutes to come out of sleep and i had 4 "welcome to the network" messages on my screen. and once again the touch pad went for a loop. with the mouse pointer jumping all over the screen when ever I moved my finger around on the touchpad.

I just wanted to let people know that a fresh install doesn't fix the sleep issue. I have tried 3 different fresh installs and I still can't wake up my macbook pro. I just have to shut it all the way down every time I would normally put it to sleep. I sure hope Apple comes out with a fix for this soon because it wastes a lot of my time. Thankfully Leopard starts up really fast, but still a pain to deal with. It's sooo close to being the perfect computer!!!

I've re-installed Leopard (erase and install) on my MacBook Pro... it's been a day old but it seems to be fine - at least it is shutting down properly and not going into the sleep-and-never-wake mode!

This seems obvious but has anybody tried hitting the F1 button after wake up? I don't think this relates to lyndonl's case but some others may have this issue. I first encountered this after the 10.5 update. Once in a while after sleep and even on startup my mbp comes up with a totally black screen. It seems the brightness setting gets messed up and all goes black. At first i could not figure out what was going on because who would expect such a glitch.

I found a resolution. I have a MacAlly PCI card that has 2 USB and 2 Firewire ports. When I removed and replaced the card, my system goes into sleep mode the way it should and comes out of sleep mode with a touch of the keyboard or mouse. I hope this helps others who may be having similar problems.
