New Classic IPod with Mac OS 10.3.9
installed latest iTunes updates and software updates

I read the apple iPod tips, downloaded latest software, rebooted, etc. still, I get this message when I connect iPod:

"You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore."

I click Ignore and still the iPod doesn't show up on my computer, however the iPod display screen says
"Connected
Eject Before Disconnection."

So the iPod knows it's connected. Only my computer doesn't recognize it. HELP.

Yeah, i just figured it out. Classic iPod is not compatible with OS 10.3.9.
I've got a 2004 PowerBook G4, with 1GB of DSRAM, and 40GB HD, 800MHz.
To what Operating System can I upgrade with these specs?

Thanks, Marcia

Correct - I was surprised but I just checked on the Apple site and it says that iPod Classic requires OS X 10.4.8 or later.

Tiger (10.4) is certainly an option and is what I would recommend. You should be able to get a copy of Tiger on eBay quite cheaply now that Leopard is available. Make sure that you get a retail version of the DVD, not just an upgrade or "restore" disk (that came with some particular model of Mac).

Leopard (10.5) officially requires a Mac with processor speed at least 867 MHz so that would seem to rule out your 800 MHz PowerBook. But there are some people who have figured out ways around this if you want to fool around with such things. As I said above, I recommend instead sticking with Tiger.

Classic requires 10.4.8. If I get Tiger, 10.4, how do i get the updates to .8? Most of the Tigers on eBay are 10.4. I saw one 10.4.8 but is that an upgrade?
Thanks for clarifying.

Classic requires 10.4.8. If I get Tiger, 10.4, how do i get the updates to .8? Most of the Tigers on eBay are 10.4. . . .

As a rule, once you have a major system upgrade disk, e.g., 10.4, all of the upgrades to 10.4.x are free and you can download upgrade packages from the Apple site.

If your disk is 10.4, you could upgrade to 10.4.1, then 10.4.2, etc., etc. for free (be sure you do them in order) - and of course, you shouldn't forget the security updates, either.

However, the easier way is to find a "combo" update to the version you want. If you start from 10.4, and apply the "combo" update to 10.4.10, for example, it takes care of all of the intermediate steps for you automatically.

There are many of the opinion that it is always preferable to upgrade via the "combo" upgrade packages. It is undoubtedly a lot easier.

added info: The "combo" updates are listed on the Apple site as well.

Classic requires 10.4.8.

"Classic" refers to the OS 9 environment running inside of OS X. It would be much clearer if you said "The iPod Classic requires a minimum of 10.4.8".

That's correct. Once you install 10.4, you can update to any later version of 10.4.x. For example, you can download and install the 10.4.10 Combo Update for free from Apple: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdateppc.html

Thank you for your help. I understand now, and Trevor, you're right, I meant iPod Classic. I guess they got me, if I want to keep this Classic iPod, although I really enjoy the current OS and I had no need to upgrade, other than the iPod gift.
