Classic launch takes 5 minutes

I have an iMac DV 400 mhz w/320 MB Ram. I installed OSX last Thursday and have had no problems with it except when I launch Classic it takes at least five minutes before the app will launch. I am not a great computer wizard, but can anybody give me a few hints as to what I might try to speed things up?

In the "old" days of OS 9, one thing that would often hold up a 9 launch was networking/ethernet. Anyway, your problem may be solved by booting into 9, going to Extensions Manager and creating a stripped-down set of extensions for Classic. You can get away with very few of the 9 extensions in Classic mode and if you take one away that X needs, it adds it automatically when you boot Classic. Be careful not to de-click any extensions needed by specific hardware (like a SCSI card) or software (like MS Office).

Also, I would rebuild the 9 desktop from the Classic System Preference panel.
