iPod Protocol

Inside the iPod, is there any protocol implemented that is used to interface the iPod to external equipments or operating systems? This protocol must be generic so that iPod can communicate and be accessed in some way with the target O/S to which it is connected to.
If nothing like the above is there inside the iPod, then is there any protocol provided by apple which can help?
