View Full Version : Fink 0.51 - is its safe to upgrade?

Is it safe to upgrade the Fink install if using the new Apple X11?
What is the proper method. I think I usually do "fink selfupdate", but docs at the Fink site make no mention of that instead pointing to binary installers. Which is correct?

"fink update-all" will do the trick for source installs. That version is listed as # 0.11.2-1. If you are using source you must update automake before the "update-all" command will install the new autoconf25. If your present automake is binary the removal is necessary in the update process towards source.
If you are on a binary stable trip, refer to the fFnk site and the Fink-users lists at http://www.mail-archive.com/fink-users@lists.sourceforge.net/maillist.html to get an idea of the process. If you use Fink Commander the updating is pretty straightforward.
bluehz,
If you're using source run:
'fink selfupdate-cvs'
Then, follow Glanz advice to update automake before the "update-all" command.
Then, 'fink update-all'
If you only install binaries:
'sudo apt-get update'
If you mix and use both source and binaries, you must upgrade both ways.

thx - I usually don't do the "fink update-all" as it takes days to complete on my machine. sao and I have discussed this before - I instead opt for updating a few pkgs at a time...maybe I setoff a few to go tonight when I retire, maybe a few tomorrow night. Is this ok with this current incarnation. FWIW - I don't think I usually instally binary (all my fink stuff has to compile) and I usually do the CVS thang (I like to live in the edge).
Although - with that recent post in the X11 by sao about suspending a long operation - I might just go for the full "update-all". Great post sao! I always knew that was possible just never knew the logistics of it.

While we are on the subject of multi-day fink updates. I just checked my fink list after updating and here is teh HUGE list of items I get that appear to need updating. Note that it wasn't but about a month ago that I did a fairly large update. As you can see the list is HUGE and the KDE stuff is mainly what causes teh multi-day installs. In light of recent developments (e.g. switching to Apple X11 instead of XDarwin) is there anything blatant you might see that I could uninstall, dispose of, or just skipp updating. Do you use KDE? I gave up on it both in my PC Debian install and on my iBook Fink install. I find it glitchy, slow, and CPU-hungry, proprietarily secretive, and full of apps I would never think of using. And I find the KWM a sloth on demerol compared to any other WM. I really don't like it. What I am waiting for is a Gnome2 for Fink. I have nearly all the libraries etc. via Fink.
bluehz,
Both ways are fine, a few pkgs at a time or update-all. You need to decide.
Well, looking at your list of installed packages, besides KDE, you need to update around 25 packages.
Just in case you decide to remove KDE, this is the easiest way:
sudo apt-get remove arts
will remove the arts sound server and 'everything' that depends on it (and all of KDE depends on it).

Like you - I find KDE extremely slow - except with (as we have discussed) using wmaker as the window manager for KDE. Its bearable. I have a few KDE apps I use occasionally (but within Blackbox), but I rarely ever fire up KDE itself which is unfortunate as I find KDE the most user-friendly polished environ for X11. Certainly the one most avg users would be comfortable in. I would still like to have the ability to launch KDE apps I think. I know that in the past - updating and installing KDE has taken well over 3 days solid, so I am a bit fearful of just deleting outright all KDE stuff.
Seems like a lot of packages to update even without KDE. For example - I just installed the "pan" newsreader yesterday - and it already needs an update. Is this to be attributed to teh new Fink install or is it just an updated package?

I did my updating yesterday. ... [32 newly installed or upgraded pkgs]. The compilation took about three hours. But I don't have KDE. Like you, I DID use a few KDE apps, such as KMail, Ksnapshot (which is excluded from the new KDE version), and the Konqueror File Manager.... that's about it. I foung Konqueror WWW way too glitchy-crashy. So I just decided to kiss KDE goodby. I even trashed QT3.
Since I placed all my Themes, etc in ~/GNUstep, Windowmaker has been my default manager. I also like Blackbox because the menu system in /sw/share/blackbox is quite easy to edit via sudo (I like keeping the Blackbox files where they were originally placed, though I created a ~/.blackbox Folder for Backgrounds etc.
Even with another "engine", I find KDE sluggish.
Anyway, I like to stick to GNU stuff as much as possible. The exceptions are a few MIT apps. BTW, you'll notice that much OpenBSD stuff is GPL'd under the Gnu licence.

I think you are right - time to 86 KDE. Now that I think about it - running KDE apps in Apple X11 was gltchy too. I guess running that code that sao suggested should be good to clean me up from KDE?

sao - I decide to wipeout my KDE per your instructions...
sudo apt-get remove arts
here is what I am getting in return...

bluehz,
'sudo apt-get remove arts' worked well for me before.
This looks like a situation where a binary package depends on a package that does not exist in binary form because of some other issues.
Or a package that didn't got built properly.
Well, I see kdelib3-ssl is gone.
Try:
'sudo dpkg --purge arts'
If it doesn't work, copy the error messages from your 'sudo apt-get remove arts' and post at 'fink users' or email Benjamin Reed (KDE package maintainer)
bluehz
01-22-2003, 12:11 PM
thx sao - posted to fink-users ...
bluehz
01-22-2003, 04:41 PM
Received a reply from someone onthe fink-user list... I hope he doesn't mind me quoting him/her here:To remove packages XXX forcefully, do the following:
dpkg -r --ignore-depends XXX
See "man dpkg" for more detail. "dpkg --purge" was near, but not exact. ;-)
Basically, KDE is provided via a few ****-packages like:
bundle-kde
kdebase3
kdeutils3
So, you don't need to select all programs to remove.
Thats a bit confusing for me though. What should I use for the XXX in the above command? Shoudl I use "arts"?
bluehz
01-22-2003, 10:28 PM
Ok I am definitely befuddled now! I requested what I should use as XXX in above command and was instructed:I would suggest a try to do "fink remove bundle-kde bundle-koffice" or
"fink remove bundle-kde-ssl" if you have SSL-enabled version.
With dpkg, exactly what you need to remove isn't clear, but the tip is
this:
1. first try "dpkg -r kdebase3" or whatever you like without
"--ignore-depends" option. This gives you a lot of dependency warnings
2. Add all the packages to kdebase3. This should eventually exhaust the
list.
To me this sounds like a peck and shoot method. Keep shooting until you hit something... then see where the thread of "can't remove dependecies" takes you.
I only appeared to have the bundle-kde-ssl installed so just for the heck of it I tried:
dpkg -r bundle-kde-ssl
and that seemed to complete fine, but didn't really affect the fink list - still have all sorts of fink crap.
Also - I tried removing "arts" and one of the errors indicating a dependency was for mplayer. I use mplayer so I don't really want to disable that - but it doesn't even appear to me to be a kde app.
So the long and short of this is still.... how can I easily remove all kde elements without destroying my fink installation?
bluehz,
Yes, Kow advice was a bit confusing and tentative. I also gather from his posts that you should try your luck with different commands.
Try running:
'fink remove bundle-kde-ssl'
'fink remove koffice'
And let me know what comes out.
The command to forcefully remove packages that I use mostly is:
'dpkg -r --force-depends package-name'
Which removes by force an installed package, except the configuration files and turn all dependencies into warnings.
(I still believe 'sudo apt get remove arts' should have worked, something must have gone wrong somewhere)

bluehz,
Well, at least it got rid of the main packages. I haven't seen anything like this before. What happens when you do now
'sudo apt-get remove arts'
I read at fink-users the advice from Alexander Hansen to useFinkCommander because you could then highlight everything (except arts) in the kde section and uninstall it.

I really want to keep the arts pkg as it is req for mplayer. I think I am going to use the finkCommander suggestion - forgot all about the GUI - so used to the CLI.
I find it hard to believe though that I am the first person to ever remove kde - I thought this would be simple!

Ok - went through with FinkCommander - removed all binary and source. Then did fink index and checked - there all still there. WTH! Its like the THING that wouldn't die!
Ok wait - I filtered via NAME contains kde in FinkCommander, once I filtered via PACKAGE = kde in FC I see the remaining I need to delete...
bluehz,
What I know is that to remove kde as recommended by Benjamin Reed (the fink 'kde' maintainer) the best was to run 'sudo apt-get remove arts'. I did it once, and read about several people who did it without any trouble.
In your case, I have no idea why it didn't work. Weird...
Anyhow, great to have FinkCommander around.
