Last night I went downloaded xchat from Fink Commander. It said it needed Gnome to go with it, so I let it download and install all of the stuff it needed. Six hours of compiling later all was installed.

xchat worked and I was going to come here today and ask how to get Gnome to be a window manager but something else came up.

When I turned on my machine this morning x11 wouldn't start up. Now it will start up as a different user on the machine, but not as my main identity.

The message I got from the console:

Mac OS X Version 10.2.3 (Build 6G30)
Jan 26 13:17:34 mine WindowServer[523]: CGXDisableUpdate: Updates disabled by connection 0x4f0b for over 1.000000 seconds

Fatal server error:
Could not create server lock file: /tmp/.X0-lock

OsVendorFatalError
AbortDDX
Quitting XDarwin...
Jan 26 13:17:35 mine WindowServer[523]: CGXSetWindowListAlpha: Invalid window -1

All was working fine last night after the install.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Next question: When it is all running again is there a way to make Gnome the wm for one of my users?

schwartze,

If you don't quit X11 via "Quit" in its menu but by some other method then it leaves behind the lock file:

/tmp/.X0-lock

and maybe also a file:

/tmp/.X11-unix/X0

The console output would read like this:
Fatal server error:
Could not create server lock file: /tmp/.X0-lock

You have to manually remove these files first before you can start X11.app again.

It seems that after another restart (not a log out, cause I tried that too) it was able to start up - but to be safe I will try the linked suggestion when I get home from work.

Thanks much.

aya:
You neglected to tell us what version of OS X you have.

It would seem that X11 did not get fully installed after your reinstall.

Since you are on Tiger, you have to use the X11 package that is on the Tiger DVD - not the one that is available from the Apple site.
If you are using the DVD, then try removing the X11-related files under /Library/Receipts before re-installing X11 from the DVD.
