Hi,
I wanted to try a few window managers beside Apple's and blackbox. I installed Sawfish. It launches, but the windows borders doesn't show up. Here's the message from the console:
XFree86 Version 4.2.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)
Release Date: 3 September 2002
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your hardware is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

libpng warning: Application was compiled with png.h from libpng-1.2.5
libpng warning: Application is running with png.c from libpng-1.0.12
libpng error: Incompatible libpng version in application and library
IMLIB ERROR: Cannot load image: /sw/share/sawfish/1.1/themes/Crux/inactive
All fallbacks failed.
Error: no such image, /sw/share/sawfish/1.1/themes/Crux/inactive:top-left-border.png
I installed Sawfish through apt-get, so I reinstalled it with "fink install". Same thing.
I looked fink list libpng, here's what I have:
libpng 1.0.12-6 PNG image format handling library
i libpng-shlibs 1.0.12-6 PNG image format handling library
i libpng3 1.2.5-2 PNG image format handling library
i libpng3-shlibs 1.2.5-2 PNG image format handling library
What's wrong?
Thanks
JBoivin,
The problem is with imlib, not libpng or libpng3.
imlib-1.9.10-9 is the latest version stable, and if you downgrade to it, sawfish will probably work.
So, the workaround is to install the stable imlib in the meantime until the developers find other way out.
'fink install imlib-1.9.10-9'

Downgrading will not solve all the problems. If you also did an update to libpng3, you may be left with totally unuseable Gnome icons in Gnome. In fact, you will probably lose all png images in all Gnome appa.
The Fink developers have said that this is an "imlib" problem... Well they are wrong. That is only part of it. There are also problems with libpng and numerous other libraries, not because of glitches in Gnome, not because of "imlib" problems.... The troblem is "not in the stars"... It is with badly ported software. In other words, the Fink developers, hardworking as they are, simply goofed, and they are not willing to admit it. Let us say that this time, their "upgrades" were less than rigorous. I am sure they will get the problem solved, in a year ot two.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
Install IceWM, then go to the Gnome control panel while in Gnome and under "Window Managers" choose IceWM, save your preference. IceWM is fully Gnome compatible and will even complement Gnome, widgets, frames etc will be returned, and you won't have to downgrade.
When I stated that "libpng" was the problem, I was told I made a misdiagnosis... hehehe Let me give another diagnosis.... >> I hereby declare the "unstable" tree a bit more than unstable. I just haven't found the correct word yet to describe its present condition. But there's hope, Sawfish will soon be adjusted to compensate for the latest updates..
Actually, not all the fault is with Fink.....necessarily. It is with the lack of testing before upgrades are posted...... Of course, unstable should mean just that. Nothing is perfect, but minimum useability is a prerequisite for all unstable editions of ALL operating systems......

You know, Glanz, you may or may not be correct in this case, but you've been mistaken enough in the past blaming the fink developers for problems with your system that it's getting pretty hard to take this 'wolf-crying' very seriously.
It would be much easier to do so if you were to work with the fink people first to get a concensus opinion and maybe a solution before making another misdiagnosis.
Nothing is perfect, but that shouldn't keep us from trying to help improve it instead of saying "Nyah, nyah, look what they did."
In my own humble but lovable opinion.

Very minor testing is the answer. And as far as my opinion goes. It doesn't exist in reality. The facts have supplanted it quite effectively.
One should take the responsibility for the mistakes one makes...., not deny them. That's only done at places like M$ HQ.
So please excuse me if I do not share your worshipful attitude. I am quite agnostic when it comes to coding....., and mistakes...and successes. I do not agree with your "shut yo trap and respect your elders" point of view.
Speaking of successes, Fink is certainly one. The team has nearly accomplished the impossible...., but not quite. They are not gods and I am the first one to admit that. I am not either, though I haven't seen the need to admit that.

Please, Glanz, if you really know so much, go and help them. Please, do so.

I don't think Craig says that you should close your mouth, but rather maybe he is refering at *the way* of expressing your opinions when you do open it.
These have been some of your thoughts in the past:
Now I haven't notified the Fink Folks. I am to &*&^%^%$%en mad.
................................
Bye-bye OSX and Fink!!! ToodleLoo Kind folks!!!!
Back to Debian..
................................
What they should have done is PULL THE FRIGGEN LIBPNG3 update until they got their act together........GRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRrrrr
Woof woooook grrrrrr!
................................
I have tweak and de-bugged countless Linux applications, and still work at that.... and
NEVER..... Let me make that clear: the word is NEVER; Never \Nev"er\, adv. [AS. n?fre; ne not, no + ?fre ever.]
1. Not ever; not at any time; at no time, whether past,
present, or future. --Shak.
Death still draws nearer, never seeming near.
--Pope.
2. In no degree; not in the least; not.
...............................
We'll put all those finkies on speed until they come up with Gnome2.......
................................
So I do not at all appreciate their tardy warning to users. They should have noticed this and reported this days ago.
................................
The imlib downgrade worked!!!!
Hooooooooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May I stop ranting now??????????
PleeeeeeZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz
Phew!!!!!!!!!
That just goes to show ya how little I know!

You just did. And between us, I must confess I tend to respect more the Fink Developers opinions and doings. Not because they could be right or wrong, but because of the maturity and consistency of their actions.

It's not true they deny them like you say, at the fink-users list, I read countless posts with this one in betweent by Benjamin Reed on 21 Jan 2003:
"I'm sorry you're frustrated, but just because historically Fink unstable has been fairly stable doesn't mean it was a guarantee. We do what we can to make things go smooth but sometimes we make a mistake. Please chill out and stop berating the developers. We didn't "let it pass", everything we've said about it has been public on the list. When it was first brought up, it was not realized that it was as big of a problem as it is.
It sounds like the workaround is to install the stable imlib in the meantime, which means all of your gnome stuff will be fixed. The reason we're not changing it right away is because we're deciding how to fix it going forward".
So please, don't go around making false statements about people.
