View Full Version : Theming the Gimp

Is there anyway of doing this using Apple's X11 with the Quartz window manager??
What I would like is to give the Gimp a somewhat more appealing look, instead of the default GTK(?) standard look. I've done a bit of research, and seen some screenshots here and there of it in Gnome, found some GTK themes (themes.org I think), but nowhere could I find a good explanation/tutorial on how to theme the Gimp (if it's even possible).
Currently I'm using X11 and installed the Gimp via Fink.
Is there anybody out there with some experience in this?

You have to program a new theme and install it.
Don't even think of asking me how to, there is a bunch of documentation in /sw/share/gtk-doc. It appears it is not trivial, but well how to have fun without some intricacies :D
Jerph,
What I did was to download a bunch of gtk themes and put them in /sw/share/themes. Then, I tried one by one in Gnome Control Center, themes. Till I found some I really liked.

Soa, that's supposed you have gnome installed, but the OP talked about twm.

Oops...you're right, he doesn't have gnome installed. I should read more carefully... :)

You will need fink installed. Which you used to install gimp. Control center - installs from fink.
gtk-engines installs from fink.
You may be able to skip some of these steps:
1. Expand the theme with gnutar -vxzf themename.tgz
2. Find your .themes directory and look to see how themes are laid out.
ie .themes/AquaX/gtk/"all the theme stuff"
3. copy all the theme stuff into the properly laid-out dir structure.
4. select the theme
If the tarball is correctly laid out you may only have to install it in the control center. Ie just skip 1 2 & 3 and select Install New Theme (just like sao said above)
then select the theme.
Unfortunately the theme I use wasn't laid out correctly and I had to do 1 2 & 3.
Here is a screenshot taken today. http://www.dreamersound.com/images/AquaX-gtk-screenshot.pdf
If you need to use the Quartz-wm check out the FAQ and read about .xinitrc .

I just went to gnome2 in fink.
I made a mistake and let it set up everything new and lost most of my AquaX-gtk theme.
Trying to install it again I lost all effect of this theme and now cannot get ANY theme other than the default. Crashes whenever I drag a theme.tgz file to the window using gnome. Do I need to drag this with the finder instead? If I browse and select It goes thru the motions but all I ever see is the default to select.
Also had a big fight with gnome to keep it from starting nautilus and metacity.
Finally got it to start enlightenment and NO workspaces available except the first one. And of course all widgets gone from enlightenment due to libpng3 and imlib update problems. BUT I had read in fink-lists that the libpng3 thing was fixed (will it never end) otherwise I would NEVER have tried gnome2.
I hope this won't be a long battle to straighten out. Took 4 days to load back all the stable stuff with dpkg last time. I'm glad I hadn't cleared out all the debs.

ps If I ever get Rosegarden to compile I'll be happy no matter how it looks.:p

Well I got Gnome downgraded and got my theme reinstalled.
Saw that someone had finally made an unstable package for Enlightenment so went for broke again.
Everything seems to work except the theme engine and the Workspace Switcher. So I enabled the pager display in enlightenment.
Found Gnome2 to be incredibly obstinate about running Nautilus till I checked the box to save settings automatically. I couldn't even kill -9 without gnome restarting it.
One thing I really miss is having the Gnome menu and dock stickness set to move to the current workspace. But maybe if I can find that setting the Workspace Switcher would work again?

Ok I seem to have found most of the problem.
I installed xLiquid from fink and it works fine.
Looked at the structure and modified the AquaX-gtk2 theme to match. It seems to be mal-formed for either gtk or gtk2 but can be installed as is with the correct dir structure. (as posted earlier. Maybe I should read my own posts:rolleyes: )
Still needs some work to REALLY look like I want but at least it has some good effect.
