I have a 9 year old G4 (OS 10.4.11) with USB 1. Can I use the new ipod classic with this system? Will the syncing be slow or just not work? Is there some sort of adapter that would allow firewire syncing?

10.4.11 is compatible with iTunes 8, so yes, the Classic will work. I also have a Classic and a 7 year old G4 "QuickSilver" running 10.4.11, and it works fine, although a bit slower than if you had a new Mac. I'm not sure if USB 1 would work, as I haven't ever tried. Apple's system requirements say you need to USB2.0, but even if you could use 1.0, it would probably be really slow. I added a cheap USB2.0 PCI card into my G4 a while ago to use for my external burner and camera.
And people have tried using the old Firewire iPod cable to sync with the new iPod, and it didn't work. The Firewire and USB protocols are very different, so I don't think there's an adapter available. If there was, it would probably be a bit expensive.
I might be able to try syncing over USB1.0 when I get home.

Sorry for the delayed response, I've been away for awhile. I'm looking into the USB2.0 PCI card solution, there seems to be some controversy about the best one to use. Thanks for the valuable information.
