I can transfer TiVO recordings to my Macbook via Toast's TiVO Transfer app. Works fine. However, I have not been able to find a way to then re-encode said recording for my iPod. I have tried Handbrake (all options are greyed out), iSquint (says it encodes it -- only takes a second and when I move the result to iTunes, it says "not available)), FFMPRG Streamclip (does not work). I even tried ripping the result with Mac The Ripper (thought I could then re-encode for iPod), but that does not work either. Does anybody know of any software that will do what I want to do? That is, take a TiVO recording and re-encode for my iPod.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried the latest beta of Handbrake? It supports more input formats.

What format are the files that you receive from TIVO Transfer?

Try MPEG Streamclip, http://www.squared5.com.

Open the Toast-TiVo-transfer file in MPEG Streamclip and then export it to MPEG-4, using the built-in presets to select an iPod format (click the "iTunes . . ." button during the export dialog).

Thanks for your responses! Yes, I have tried the latest Handbrake. The movies are an odd file type, nameofmovie.tivo, so guess there must be something about that. I will look into MPEG Streamclip as well. In researching a bit yesterday, I found that Toast 9 will do what I want. Thinking about investing in that update as it reads like it will also act like a slingbox so that we can watch our recorded shows when we travel. Be worth the price!

Anyway, thanks for your help -- think I am on the road now!

Toast does the encoding. If you have Tivo Transfer then you have Toast.

I also you Elgato's H.264 Turbo to increase the encoding speed.

Works great due it every week for three tv programs I watch at lunch time.

O.K., I have successfully transferred the tv shows to my iPod. But there was some strange behavior that I hope someone can clarify for me. I told the app to save one movie to my desktop. It went through all the motions, but nothing showed up on my desktop. Thinking it had failed, I did the conversion again (along with another movie that I had transferred previously), telling the app to save them in iTunes. Again nothing showed up. When I did a spotlight search, it found them in a folder Preview>users>Mary, (I think) etc. When I double clicked on each, they opened in iTunes and were saved there.

My question is, what was I doing wrong when telling the app to save in my selected place? Do I have to do a search every time I want to convert a show? What/where is the Preview folder? The app Preview did not open, so I don't think it was connected to that.

Thanks in advance for any light somebody can shed.
