Trouble syncing iPod Touch with iCal

Hi gang. I just bought an iPod Touch and am enjoying it. One of my hopes was to have it replace my Palm for calendar management, but I'm having trouble with this. No problem syncing iPT with MobileMe, but getting the latter or iPT to sync with iCal isn't working. I could live just fine without MM, but really need iCal and iPT to sync. As far as I can tell, I have all the appropriate check boxes checked and cables connected right, but no-go. A search on the net and this forum hasn't shed much light. Any ideas what I might do to get this to work?

Syncing the mobile calendar via MobileMe and directly via the USB cable are mutually exclusive.

If you want to sync directly to iCal on the Mac via USB, turn off Calendar syncing in the .Mac account on the iPod in the Mail, Contact, and Calendar prefpane. You can still sync the other stuff via MobileMe if you want.

Huh? My iPhone and my first-generation iPod touch sync fine to iCal. I don't have MobileMe, though.
