I have an iPod nano (new) and a Mac mini. I've connected the iPod through a USB hub and the battery is charged, and I've been through the registration process. Now I'd like to sync. Problem: nothing's happening.

The iPod screen shows "no music". It also says "you can sync music from iTunes" but it doesn't say how. The "sync iPod" option in the iTunes menu is grayed out.

I don't know whether ejecting and reconnecting would help, but in any case I can't see how to eject it. The user guide says I should click the "eject" button next to iPod nano in the list of devices in the iTunes source list - but where's the iTunes source list? I don't see it on my screen. The guide says I can also eject it by dragging the iPod nano icon on the desktop to the trash, but there's no such icon.

It looks as though the iPod isn't properly connected, but the Mac "USB Device Tree" shows an iPod - and there's no other iPod connected.

Can anyone help?

Are your OS and iTunes and USB (including the hub) what the latest Nano requires?

USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later
iTunes 8 or later

iTunes and OS: yes.

As for the USB, I think so, but I can't tell by looking at the hub itself. This is what the Mac shows as its USB Device Tree (which I don't fully understand):

USB Device Tree
_ USB Bus
_ USB Bus
▾ USB Bus
__ USB Receiver
▾ USB High-Speed Bus
__ ▾ USB 2.0 Hub
____ ▾ Keyboard Hub
________ Apple Keyboard
____ ▾ USB 2.0 Hub
________ iPod
________ deskjet 6122

If this confirms that the USB setup is correct, can you suggest anything else?

Thanks in advance.

Try the 5 Rs: Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore.

Problem solved. It was the "retry" that did it. Thank you very much.

In my innocence I had assumed that all USB ports were the same; apparently not!
