View Full Version : Automatically Move Songs to Different Genre?

Some of the CDs I rip or songs I purchase from iTunes are in the "Hip-Hop/Rap" genre while others are categorized as being in the "Hip Hop/Rap" genre (no "-"). Is there any utility I can run that will automatically scan my iTunes collection and assign any songs in one genre to the other? I get tired of having to change them by hand.
Thanks.
No real need for any extra tools.
Select your Library on the left side of iTunes.
In the Search field at the top right, enter the Genre listing you want to change.
Click on one of the songs in the list. Then use the Edit menu to invoke Select All (or Command-A).
From the File menu select Get Info (or Command-I).
In the Multiple Item Information box that open, change the Genre field to how you'd like it to read. Press OK.
Depending upon how many songs you're changing, it may take iTunes a few minutes or so.

Yes, I already do that. I was hoping that there might be an AppleScript or some third-party application that could be run when I open iTunes that would scan my music collection and make the change automatically.

If it already exists, you'll probably find it at: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/
If not, there's enough info there (tutorial-wise) to learn how to write your own.
Honestly though, iTunes makes it so easy for us to do it manually that
it wouldn't surprise me if such a script doesn't exist.
[seems as though this is not an 'iPod forum' type question.]
Indeed, follow Hal Itosis' suggestion to check that site. I did, and there are scripts to alter the genre listing, but I may have missed something that doesn't require manual initiation.
Also, I think Hal Itosis makes a good point: iTunes make it so easy to do this manually. If something is found to do it automatically, this will likely become annoying as the music library grows. For a program or script to check every song in a library of more than a few thousand songs will mean a big drag on the system every time iTunes is launched.
