Get Tube, http://web.mac.com/simonvrel/en/gettube/gettube.html

TubeTV, http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/tubetv/

TubeTV has more features and will allow you to manage the video from within iTunes, but Get Tube will also perform the needed tasks: download the YouTube video and convert it to an iPod-compatible format.

I use http://keepvid.com/ which will let me choose from a lower quality FLV file or higher quality MP4 file. There are also plugins for both FF and Safari that will DL the HD video, but I have tried them since my iPhone won't load them.

It doesn't matter whether you have a YouTube account. The downloading is performed by TubeTV or Get Tube as you watch the YouTube video.

TubeTV has its own browser window. In TubeTV, find the YouTube video, then use the app's "down arrow" icon (upper right corner) to start the process. In the app's preferences, you'll want to set the Downloading section to convert for iPods.

One plus for TubeTV that I didn't mention is that it allows you to queue up a stack of video for download and conversion. However, I've found that you can do only about a dozen at a time before you max out the CPU and TubeTV aborts.

Get Tube uses a different method. First you use Safari or Firefox to find the YouTube video, then you switch to the Get Tube app and tell it whether you're using Safari of Firefox to start the download/convert process. Get Tube's preferences should be set to convert to .mp4 to make a video that will play on your iPod.

You'll find a little more information (though not lot) on the developers' websites.

I'll have to give solipsism's recommendation a try the next time I need to capture a YouTube video. Always looking for that perfect tool. . . .
