whirly rainbow circle only in ipod/itunes

I assume the colored circle that turns is asking you to wait. Whenever I add to ipod nano 2nd gen it seems like everything gets stuck. It's been going on 24 hours that whirly has been showing in itunes. The pod is charged, but it won't let me unplug ipod. If I muscle it off I get the "you may have damaged...etc. Today, I started pressing the f-keys to get an arrow back, which worked. It still won't let me close i-tunes. (running10.4.11)

If you create a brand new user on your computer, does the new user also have this problem when your iPod is connected and iTunes is running?
