The Apple product specifications say Core 2 Extreme. I was not able to find any Core 2 Duo mobile processor running over 2.6 GHz on Intel's website. The iMac's Core 2 Extreme mobile is "only" a dual core processor, though, so the difference might primarily be marketing.

iMac processor type
Thanks.
Here is the bigger problem: - intel carries a 'core 2 duo' series of processors - intel carries a 'core 2 extreme' series of processors - the extreme being the better, faster processor - on the apple web site they make you believe you order the 'core 2 extreme' series, they even show 2 different intel logos - both box and imac say the computer contains a 'duo' series of processor - apple says, it's just a typo, 'about this mac' says duo, computer contains the 'extreme' processor nevertheless This is both confusing and misleading. Are they advertising falsely? What am I missing? M. |

Purchased 24" - 2.8 Intel Core 2 Extreme machine from the Apply site.
Here is the problem: - intel carries a 'core 2 duo' series of processors - intel carries a 'core 2 extreme' series of processors - the 'extreme' being the better, faster processor (check the intel site: http://www.intel.com/products/deskto...rocess+desktop) - on the apple web site they make you believe you order the 'core 2 extreme' series, they even show 2 different intel logos (see under tech specs and processor on the apple site: http://www.apple.com/imac/technology/intel.html) - having rcvd the computer, both box and imac 'about this mac' say the computer contains a 'duo' series of processor - apple says, it's just a typo in mac os/x, 'about this mac' says 'duo', computer contains the 'extreme' processor nevertheless - apple also says, start you computer in windows and it will say 'extreme'?? - apple care (tech person) says, it's a 'duo' computer should be returned - by the way, this is the 2nd computer I received, the 1st one was returned for this exact same problem, now the refuse to acknowledge the problem This is both confusing and misleading. Are they advertising falsely? What am I missing? What should I believe, accept? Anybody else experienced this? Help !! M. |

If your speed is 2.8GHz, it's a Core 2 Extreme processor. The System Profiler that displays the processor information hasn't been updated to recognize the difference. There is no false advertising.

What you need to find out is the actual model number of the processor, not just the name. System Profiler might give you that information. Click "More Info" when you are at About this Mac to open System Profiler. Once you have the model number of the processor then you can determine if Apple is being deceptive or just clumsy and/or cautious.
