file links on Windows servers

The School system where I work has begun sending out links to documents on windows servers, mostly pdfs, over email instead of attaching the documents to the email, i.e., file://\\aXXXXsmis3\prodev\announcements\dwdflyer.pdf/. I know they are doing this to save space on the servers.
Those of us who use Macs, cannot connect to them or read them. Is there some way for us to be able to get to them? I know they won't give out the IP of the server. When I use the Network Utility to Lookup the server name all I get is the main Exchange server's IP.

well SMB requires authentication and full network path, so those links should be done like this

\\computername\path\to\file

Instead of an explorer path. See if that makes any difference and it should work since SMB works that way on a mac, and make sure you have windows file sharing enabled.

Thanks tlarkin,

So, I should put in smb:\\aXXXXsmis3\prodev\announcements\dwdflyer.pdf/ in my web browser or should I do it as a Connect to server under the Go menu?
