Compiling mplayer from source..
I'm pretty sure there are a few gurus here who have managed to compile mplayer on os X.4 and probably keep updated cvs on their systems. I'm interested in keeping updated Mplayer CVS on my system, and am looking for a fairly thorough guide to doing so.
While i'm not shy around a shell, I'm a complete newb to both cvs and the delicacies of compiling a fully functional version of mplayer from source, but if you could bear with me it would be very useful for me. |

plasmacutter,
To get mplayer via anonymous cvs, follow the instructions on the following page: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design7/dload.html Also, from the same page you could download mplayer Mac OS X preview release application, latest is based on dev-cvs - date 24 July. (I used fink to install from source mplayer version 1.0.0pre6a-10 ) . |

well.. for some reason the mplayer cvs snapshot is not recognizing it's own libavcodec dir, despite it's apparently documented capability to do so from the mplayer makefile.
The reason I'm trying to compile the CVS is because of the proliferation of H.264 MKV files. vlc crashes on these, and the last snapshot of vlc which could open them had terrible chops in the pans. Mplayer osX has similar chops, and the mplayer mac preview on the downloads page you pointed me to, though the pans are smooth, fails to properly render h.264 clearly, producing macroblocks and noise which remind me of .asx files from the dark ages of fall 2001. (i'm using a dual 2.7 ghz g5.. it is not underperforming due to a lack of muscle under the hood) The fink and darwin ports version of mplayer plays the 264 streams flawlessly.. but just to tick me off it can't properly sync the audio >.< It's truly frustrating. |

Actually (and I've run into this before on my Linux box), if you're using MPlayer CVS, you also need to get the libavcodec source from the FFMpeg project.
To quote the mplayer site,
They're serious about that word "copy", too; if you don't copy the libavcodec and libavutil directory trees, and instead use symlinks, it won't work. Although if you're not going to compile FFMpeg, moving the directory trees is a valid option as well. |

Sorry, but I AM shy around the shell, etc.
![]() Is there anywhere from which I can DL a compiled version, ready to run? I am now just a user, not a programmer/developer as I was 35 years ago. Thanks...Gary |

Giyf
Look at: http://www.google.com/search?q=mplay...ary+%22os+x%22 Also, more generally, when looking for an application, search www.macupdate.com and www.versiontracker.com
