Cannot change external drive icon

I just setup an Antec MX-100 SATA external hard drive, but for some reason I cannot change the system icon for the drive itself. Any other icons I attempt to copy and paste using the usual Get Info method just pastes a plain, blank white icon. I can hit delete to revert to the standard USB drive icon but would very much like to change that.

I'm thinking this may be because I formatted the drive for FAT instead of one of the Mac formats. The only reason I did this was so that I could use the external drive on Windows, Mac, Linux, etc.

Can anyone confirm for me that you can't set a custom icon on a non-Mac format disk? Or is something else going on here?
