External Drive Icon Problem

The icon for the Lacie external HD keeps disappearing from the desktop of our PowerMac at work. The drive is still mounted as it appears in Disk Utility and if I switch it off in an attempt to get it back, I get the usual message about not ejecting. This happens in both accounts

The only way to get it back is to do a restart. Any suggestions for a fix??

PowerMac G5, 10.4.11, 500Gb Firewire Lacie drive.

Check Disk Utility when the drive vanishes.

Also, check your logs for relevant messages when the drive vanishes. You can easily view your logs using the Console app, in /Applications/Utilities.

It's still there, or did you mean something else?

Thanks, Trevor. I'll check that.

Look at your Finder Preferences when you have this problem. Is the option to show disks on the Desktop checked? (not just a minus sign)

In disk utility, is the Volume (name of the drive under the device description), grey or black? Grey means it's been unmounted. If not, can you unmount it with the Unmount button? Will it mount again and does it appear then on your desktop?

Thanks LV, Trevor. I'll check all that next time I'm in at work, which won't be for a couple of days.

Came into work today and it's still on the desktop. Checked the logs for the period when it last disappeared and couldn't see anything. I'll come back if it happens again, hopefully with a bit more info.
Thanks.
