I am using Max OS X v 10.4. Two days ago i tried reinstalling the OS because i couldn't start up. During the process, i can't select a destination because there is none available! Its empty. I tried disk utility but it shows only the CD drive and the Install Disc 1. No hard drive. And i cant even eject the disc anyhow! Start up disk shows the Disc 1 and Network Start up. Nothing else. When i press the Apple sign on screen (top left), all are grayed, so i cant choose any. I'm totally devasted and confused. Please help me as i'm new to MacBook. i've tried all i could and i'm a foreign student studying in Ukraine where no authorized service center is available and i badly need it for my studies. Thank you very, very much...

If Disk Utility does not recognize any hard drive connected when there is clearly an internal hard drive connected, then you have a hardware failure somewhere. Possibly a cable, possibly the hard drive itself, and it's unlikely but it could also be the computer's motherboard (also called the logic board).
Assuming that the hardware failure is the drive and not the cable, you can replace the hard drive with any 2.5" (wide) 9.5mm (tall) SATA hard drive, then reinstall OS X from your original DVD to get back up and running quickly. Trevor |

While booted from the Tiger DVD, Open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Does your internal drive appear there? Can you repair it? If it does appear, but you cannot repair it, I suggest you purchase a copy if DiskWarrior 4.x (on CD) and use it to repair your drive.
If it did appear, and the data on the drive is unimportant, you can partition the drive to allow installing OS X again.

Las_Vegas is absolutely right, there might very well be a software explanation of the problem, and I shouldn't have gone straight to a hardware solution.

Thank you very much for the replies Las_Vegas and trevor. I've tried doing as Las_Vegas mentioned but, no, my internal drive doesn't appear in Utilities while booting from Tiger DVD. It shows only the CD drive and the disc 1. Hmm, any other ways to make my Mac detect the internal drive.Or do i have to look into my hardwares as what trevor said? Thank you very much again and i really appreciate the help.. : )

What do you mean "disk 1"? Do you have an external drive attached? If not, disk1 is your internal drive. It's likely appearing in grey since it's not mountable and Disk Utility can't identify its filesystem. I would try DiskWarrior on it since I have it, but I wouldn't have a lot of confidence that it's recoverable. Likely, it will need to be replaced.

Disk 1 is the Tiger DVD installation disk number 1. Anyway, guess i have to change my internal drive soon. Hopefully i get one here. Thank you for all the support.
