Problem with Sound Rendering
Ahoy there, as of Snow Leopard, I'm having periodic issues with sound rendering. I'm using headphones, if it makes any difference.
So, I'll be using Ventrilo or be on YouTube or using iTunes or something, and if anything passes a threshold of sound tolerance (I.E. Computer thinks it is too loud), my Computer will lock up for about .75 of a second, and if the loud noise continues, it can lock up for up to 8-10 seconds, based on how quickly I can hit the Mute button. 2.4 GHz intel Core 2 Duo (Early 2008 Aluminum, I think.) with 3 GB of RAM. 10.6.1. My apologies if this is in the incorrect forum, I didn't see anything directly pertaining to Sound ![]() Thanks! |

What sound related system hacks have you installed? Or what sound related device drivers have you installed?

I have made no (intentional) modification to the sound system at any point, nor have I installed any Drivers other than what is bundled with 10.5.
However, here are my sound details-- based on System Profiler information-- Intel High Definition Audio: Device ID: 0x106B00A0 Audio ID: 60 Available Devices: Speaker: Connection: Internal Headphone: Connection: Combo Internal Microphone: Connection: Internal Line In: Connection: Combo S/P-DIF Out: Connection: Combo S/P-DIF In: Connection: Combo |

Hmmmm. This still sounds like you've got some sound hack installed. Can you do this--launch Activity Monitor and set it to show "All Processes" in the popup near the top of the window. Then click the "% CPU" column once or twice so that it sorts the processes using the most CPU Cycles to the top.
Now, intentionally trigger the problem with iTunes or whatever, but keep your eye on Activity Monitor. When the problem happens, what process is at the top of the list, sucking down all of your computer's processor cycles? Trevor |

No dice. Still World of Warcraft at 47%, Ventrilo at about 7.1%, Firefox around 7ish and "prl_dsp_service" at like, 4-5.

Oh, I just noticed-- "coreaudiod" spikes briefly to 3-4%.

But only a very brief spike in coreaudiod? Whereas the computer's GUI locks up for several seconds, i.e. much longer than the visible spike in coreaudiod? If that's the case, I'm stumped.
If nobody else has any better suggestions, try an Archive and Install. Trevor |
