Windowserver problems [Invalid tracking area]

Does anyone have any idea why I am receiving these errors flowing continuously through the console. Never stops. I read a related post earlier and it stated to repair permissions... but that had no effect. Whats going on with this...

I've noticed the same thing. Something that also happens to me which I've not received a good answer for is a large number of WindowServer hits (60-80 per second). Do you see the same when you type:

sudo fs_usage

It only happens to me and some others here who both (a) have Panther installed and (b) eMacs. Another who has a G4 Dual-500 Mhz and Panther does not see this.

That's it.

What do you suppose it means, and do you think the two things are related?

I have no idea... not sure why its running through a cache - and this may be completely off base.. but I am running wth 1.2G of RAM.. I shouldn't be having anything run through a cache... liek I said that may be completely unfounded... my stupidity.

All I know is its driving me nuts. WindowServer spiking at %25 cpu at times....

cache doesn't necessarily mean disk. there are memory caches too.

i would suspect some third-party deal causing those messages.

try and discover what by a safe login, then start up your login thingies singularly and monitor. of course, it could be an opaque thing like a menu extra.

From this thread involving some of these same issues, I noted that

1) Starting in safe-mode makes this problem go away.
and
2) It is not 3rd-party related because it even happened to me after a clean install (of Panther).

I'm pretty sure that it did not happen on my eMac (at work) running Jaguar. I still had (and have) Jaguar installed on a small partition on that eMac and back then I'm pretty certain that I booted and checked fs_usage and did not find all those WindowServer cache hits. It is a minimal install of Jaguar 10.2.8, just for emergencies. So, back then, I re-installed Panther to make sure that I was rid of anything that I had added on (which wasn't much anyway). It still happened/happens that I get 70 or so WindowServer hits per second.

I pleaded several times for anyone to check fs_usage on their eMacs or machines capable of Quartz Extreme but nobody did. Finally, we got a few more copies of OS X 10.3 in the department and it was installed on another eMac and a Dual-500 MHz G4. The other eMac has the same activity as mine, but the Dual-500 MHz G4 (almost certain QE capable) does not. This does not happen on my iMac at home.

So, with these eMacs, anyway, it seems to be something with Panther (except on Safe-Mode). What model is your computer, bluehz?

[PS: I can't double-check out my Jaguar claim at the moment, because I'm still in the middle of a 2-day compiling of KDE 3.2.1 from Fink.]

[PPS: I just checked the thread above (page 3), and verified that I had posted my Jaguar results: fs_usage does not report wild WindowServer hits with 10.2.8.]

Yes - Panther with latest updates (not incl latest Security Update which borked my system and cause me to have to do an archive/install about a week ago) ....

I am possibly hitting on something here... I have been testing a PrefPane called "Perpheral View" that watches for peripherals (USB/FW, etc). Since disabling it - the windowserver.log has quieted down nicely. Although I can't be sure that was teh only thing I quit/disabled.

macmath - do you keep any network volumes mounted? Just curious. I have several internal LAN volumes mounted at boot time with Samba and webdav. They remian connected 24/7. Although I don't see any correlation between them and the windowserver stuff. It was actually my first thought.

No. Nothing is mounted except on occasion for a few minutes.

I had thought it was perhaps related to some errors I always had in system.log at startup time (it seems like there is some hdwe inconsistency that the OS is not expecting). I am not with that machine right now to tell you which one I mean

Hmm,

Another post on this issue with no solution

Any new hints at the solution?

I am having the same problems with a 1Ghz PB and 256Mb RAM and Panther will all updates.

I've found no solution either. I suspect (and I don't know enough to have any valid hypotheses) that this is something related to Panther and certain hardware, and might be cured in a future update or 10.4. It occurs on every eMac in our office that has Panther installed, and does not occur on 10.1.x or 10.2.x on the eMacs. It does not occur on my (lowly) Summer 2001 iMac. I'd be interested in seeing if it happens on other 1GHz PBs with Panther.

I wonder how much RAM bluehz has? The eMacs only have 384 MB, and your PB barely has enough to run at 256 MB. My iMac has 512 MB. I think you'd notice a very large performance bump if you added another 512 MB.

Thanks macmath. I posted a question in the apple forum asking is someone could copy their fs_usage file. Will let you know. Let's hope it is normal.

I haven't been able to locate too many responses yet. If anyone can just quickly run the command:
sudo fs_usage -w

And copy and paste the output it would be great to compare.

Thanks.

Just to remind you from the other thread that it occurred even on a fresh Panther install (no third parties installed), and it did not happen if you started up in Safe Mode.

Good luck getting responses. I don't mean to be bitter, but I *begged* for that several times on page 3 of that thread above and no one responded. It is not risky and it is not like it takes hardly any time. But then again, I might have annoyed people (with my previous posts) that you have not.
