iBook and Sleeping
I have a new iBook that I got just last December running OS X 10.2.5. When I used to close the lid on it, it went to sleep immediately. Starting maybe a week and a half ago, when I closed the lid, there was a delay of maybe 45-60 seconds before the iBook went to sleep. Now when I close the lid, it doesn't go to sleep at all, even after sitting on my desk for a few minutes. Does anyone know what the problem is, and more importantly, what a solution might be?

A question:
Have you opened your keyboard up recently? If so, you may have replaced it improperly, causing the keys to be depressed by the screen. Just a thought off the top of my head. |

Not recently, no. I did open the keyboard, but the problem with sleeping didn't start until weeks after I did that.

Do you remain logged in when you close the lid?
If so try logging out and then putting the system to sleep... just thinking you might have a process that's not sleeping... if that works then check through what apps you use and what preferences you have set etc.. --Zed

me too!
hey all
i would love to hear more input on this thread. i have had the same problem with my iBook for over a year. (almost as long as i've had it). mine used to sleep after closing the lid almost instantly. now, however, it doesn't sleep at all. no matter what. logged in, not logged in, all apps quit, etc... i don't know if it is a sensor problem, or something else. i've tried resetting the power manager, as hinted to me when i posted about this months ago. i really hate that i have to manually press the power button to bring up the choice of sleeping. but it's my only option. most of the time, if i choose 'sleep' from the apple menu, it will sleep for 5 to 10 seconds, then instantly wake back up. i have never had any other system related problems, and i have no third-party hack-apps or anything like that installed. any ideas? |

It doesn't make a difference whether I am logged in or out, if that helps at all.

Sounds to me like it may be a software related issue. the first step i would take is going to:
http://www.apple.com/support and download any firmware or OS update i could for that ibook. If that does not fix the problem look into other situations. Like, for example, do you have an airport, or other wireless card in your laptop? If, so maybe you have a wake on LAN option enabled. I have not really dealt with wake on LAN on the mac side, but with our windows machines in our company i have seen issues. They will not go to sleep properly, or wake up by themsleves. Do you have any services running in the background? Like a system monitor, or resource monitor, etc etc... What are your power settings? Have you tried going into the power/battery settings for your laptop? Try setting back to default see what happens. Hope these tips help you out. |

How ironic
funny enough I am looking for a way to close the lid of my iBook and to have it runing, for when I conect it to a screen or when I want the itunes running but want iBook to be closed and protected.
I know that some pc notebooks ave the osibility to controll that, maybe through softwer, so may be I just need to bang it against the wall )not a cance. |

Re: How ironic
There is a way to do that -- but it's not recommended, as PowerBooks and iBooks dissipate a lot of heat out of the top (keyboard area) of the computer. |

Re: Re: How ironic
This might be correct, but for the record I've been running my iBook 700 with the lid closed extensively and it doesn't get particularly warm. Of course, I wouldn't recompile my kernel with the lid closed but for wardriving (on my bike with the iBook in my backpack) and listening to iTunes or similar lighter tasks I have yet to see any signs of excessive heating. |

Re: How ironic
Kismac has a module for this. Search these forums for it...there was a pretty good thread that came up with this solution....even though kismac isn't specifically designed for this.... |

Re: Re: How ironic
Be careful with the Kismac-provided kernel and 10.2.5 though. According to the Kismac-author it may render your system unbootable. However, compiling your own kernel from CVS using the nosleep-patch provided by the Kismac-page works flawlessly. It's not for everyone but works really well if you're up for some UNIX-Power-Baby-Yeah!

As for my problem, I think it might be a problem with the catch/sensing mechanism that I might need to get fixed... How long does a standard Apple warranty last?

running with lid closed
paragon:
The simple answer is that it is not recommended to run an iBook with the lid closed. Hence there is no simple way to do it. The only way I know of to do it is to install the kernel extension that is provided by Kismac and doing that comes with some risk of instability, not to mention the possibility of hardware damage due to heat. If in spite of the risk, you want to do it, just follow the instructions given with Kismac. |

any kind of mechanism (mechanical part) that is broken on a laptop may very well not be covered under warranty. It depends on what the company considers abuse. It really sucks, and sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. Any kind of plast piece, chasis, latch, and battery are not covered under warranty. so be careful with your laptops, or buy extended warranty plans.
