My Printer Recommendation: Brother HL-1440

I just thought I'd put this out there as I didn't find this printer through here, though I looked here first to help find a printer. Maybe someone else in similar circumstances to me will find this useful.

If you just need a printer--one that works and doesn't cost a bajillion dollars in upkeep, I highly recommend the Brother HL-1440. It's a full monochrome laser printer, is max fast and very quiet. I got it to replace an Epson 880 Color Inkjet and have had at least 5 inkjets prior to this purchase.

I just simply got sick of how expensive ink jet cartridges are, how slow the printers are, and how poor their text looks compared to a laser. I don't have a digital camera, and have access to very high quality color printers at work for the one time per year that I really need color.

Cost (Office Depot): $199.99
(available for slightly less online or for refurb)
Toner cost: $49 for 3000 page, $69 for 6000 page.
Drum (20,000 page): $115
Cost per page of black and white, including paper: 1.4 cents

Most inkjets cost about 5 cents per page for text, so especially considering this printer's price, it only made sense for me to go with a laser at home.

Oh, and I'm running 10.2.6 and it runs perfectly with native Jaquar drivers from Brother. Did I mention that it also works with Linux?

Brother HL-1440 endorsement

I agree. I purchased this printer about 9 months ago, on a friend's recommendation, and have used it consistently since then. It works great, I've had no troubles with any release of OS X (currently running X.2.6) on either of my machines (PB 667MHz & Cube).

If you want a dependable, reasonably fast and high quality printer, you won't go wrong with this one.

My 2˘.
