Ipod help ?

Ipod help ?

I am still researhing..... If anyone as any quick answers...

I am Systems Manager, that has had not had the Joy of working with Ipods before.

One of my Clinets had me rebuild his systems recently (Ti book and a Desktop).

The Ipod rom (1.3 Itunes 4.1) was a clinet of both machies before the rebuilds.

I suppose I could Carbon Copy CLone the Ipod for back up??

I do not see an Obvious way to tell the Ipod to fall in Love with either computer and forget about the old version of the same computer, I imagine it is looking for.

The Ipod mounts. I tried dragging the Ipond Song List or the Ipond onto the Computers I tunes empty list, No Go.

I tried Importing and Export playlists, No Go.

Color me a little Confused for now.

Please note when I plug it the Message read Basically do you want your Computers Playlist to OverWrite the Ipod **When I basically want to do the reverse being all the SOngs on the Ipod to the Computers.

There's no built-in way to get the songs from the iPod to the machine. Look for a 3rd party app on VersionTracker to get the songs off the iPod. I've used XPod, but it was slow, and I don't know if there's anything better out there.

you might also want to check out iPod Viewer on Version Tracker. It worked for me.

Wow thats Nuts:)

Wow thats Nuts Thanx

I was aware that Apple did not gove your direct Access to the Data but I was not aware it did not let you rebless a computer or Unbless the list in the Ipod etc.

Apple will have to Adress this. Thanx.

P.S. But your responses imply browsing gaining access to Stored Data and then I guess overwirting the Iod once the Data is backed up. I suppose then it will also forget about its old assocations/loves.

I don't believe there's any need to replace the songs on the iPod when you copy them off. As for it's love for certain machines, I've never had a problem with it on 5 different machines (and counting).

err ok now a little Confused

Use Ipod Viewer for backup.

However If we want to start to Sync Ipod with two New/Old computers?

At the moment the computers offer to overwrite whats on the Ipod.

I suppose if I copy the files to the correct directly manually it will be in sync. But The goal is too keep them in Sync.....

I suppose that's the difference, I prefer to manually copy what I want on my iPod to my iPod.

From my understanding (i don't own an ipod but have used several of them) when you want to copy data off the ipod onto your system you should use the 3rd party app, and not itunes. iTunes will want to synch the current music library with the ipod. This was designed this way so you could not share music and pirate songs that you did not own.

I like they Like

I will read the Docs for Ipod Viewer.

*********If it were my Ipod rather then my clinets I would probably like to manually sync too.

That sad my clinet and many ohter people (Apple fault) would want to do Auto. And of course it would be nice for unit to work as intended.

I suspect one has to Delete the correct Partition to Virginize.

Or Let the Ipod (once backed up) get overwritten by Itunes on one of the machines and perhaps it will forget about both, since Apple is protecting the music not the Ipod.

The point of the ipod is to synchronize your iTunes library with the ipod. So when you sync the ipod it wants to do a complete sync. You can turn off the option to auto sync on connection through the ipod options. You can manually sync by dragging and dropping either songs or playlists to the ipod in the source pane of iTunes. Also there is a way to get to the songs on the ipod without 3rd party software - use the Terminal to navigate to

/Volumes/name_of_ipod/iPod_Control/Music

Here you will see a set of folders or directories if you wish named F00 to F19
These are folders containing your tunes. Use the open command in the Terminal to open each of these directories. It will open that directory in a Finder window. You will see the mp3 files and can drag and drop if you like. Do not try to drag files TO the ipod this way. They will not show on the iPod interface.

the best tool to get audio file off of an iPod

http://www.scifihifi.com/podworks/

podworks is very fast at what it does. no beachballs during startup...

suck all of the songs off of the iPod, build an iTunes library with the resulting files, then sync back to the iPod.

Thanx this seems great

Thanx this seems great: Podworks $8

I read the Verion tracker reviews throughly av 4.7, mostly 5 Stars with somewhat slighly lower reviews for older versions from Dec 02.

I have noticed any time a Software product get over, 4.3+ or so Stars it is usually quite good.

Its Installed and waiting for my client to come back with is Ipod

IPod Update

Podworks Indeed Kicks for $8. Allowing you to Back up an Ipod that as lost its association with MACS it used to sync with.

You even can Put Podsworks on the Ipod registered and therefore use it on any computer you connect your Ipod too.
------------------------------------------------------
However, I thought I would Finnish this thread in regards to Last steps answering my Ipod questions that eveyone here helped with....
-------------------------------------------------------------
In order to recover Ipod Data use Podworks to Gain Finder Access with very complete Song Info and Copy Way Quick.

Once the Songs are Backed Up (and if you have A lot of music [this Ipod had over 1600 songs] ) Most would want Itunes to manage the syncing between the Ipod and Multiple MACS now that the Songs are backed up.
----------------------------------------------------------
You can then Point ITunes Location Prefs to the newly podworks Copied Songs.

Then Import Library within Itunes.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Then You can use Apple's Firmware Utility 1.3 (For the Original Ipods) to erase and Restore the Ipod to the Factory Defaults. Of course you would have previously updated yout firmware. I assume you can use the 2.01 Firmware updater for new Ipods. ** The Utilty has two funtions 1) Firmware Update or 2) Erase Ipod and restore facory Defaults.

Having Backed Up I of course proceeded to Erase and restore Factory Defaults.

Now next time you mount you Ipod Itunes will ask if you would like to Automatically Sync with your Ipod again (the Ipod no longer thinks it belongs to the computers that had been rebuilt).
