Talking Old ipod update to 2.0?

Does anyone know if it is possible to update an old ipod to the new firmware (2.0)? I have an old 10GB ipod and can't get any of the new functions, like playlists on the run or new games. If anyone knows of any hacks or updates, that would be sweeet.

I know the update is only supposed to be for the docked ipods but if people can port linux to ipods then we should be able to figure out how to update the old ones some how. Or is there some kind of new hardware issue with the docked ipods that makes the old ones not able to run the 2.0 firmware?

My answer to your question is the same as Yellow's The dockable ipods are different hardware. The old iPods can't be updated to 2.0. Sorry!

If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all!

The new iPods don't physically have the RAM (I don't know if it is flash ram or something like it) to support the new software. I would love to have those games and on-the-go options but hey, they need to give us a reason to upgrade right?

Personally, I could care less about the new iPod, aside from just redefining the term bad ass MP3 player I really don't need more than 5gigs of space. I mean... that does equate to about 2 full DAYS of music, and the battery only lasts for 10 hours!

I think the new ones and old ones are very different.

Those guys from Linux-on-Ipod are working on getting linux to work on the old ones (and I'm glad they continue with that one and not change to the new ones!!!!) and they said about 2 weeks ago that getting linux to work on the new ones is a whole different story....so guess they're pretty different.

Gotta say: KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK WITH GETTING LINUX ON THE IPOD!!! =)

Got a 5Gb Ipod also and happy with it, never had any probs and I had more accidents with it then I can count on my 2 hands but it never stopped working or got slower or anything. Love it!! =)

Later people!

Ps: If anyone stumbles upon some cewl ipod hacks plz say so on this forum...always wanne know all the ipod hacks/tweaks/cracks...whatever makes it better.

Btw: is it possible to make extra menu's in the ipod menu?? (probably not otherwise there would be a program for it I suppose).

Angry old iPods

Old iPods have 32Mb of ram in them, and Apple say they can't get the updates to work on them, well that beggars belief! Win95 worked on 32Mb and they can't get some poxy little games working? This is the one thing that has REALLY annoyed me to come from Apple. I only bought my 20Gb iPod late last year and already they're making it obsolete! i really can't believe how Apple could do this to us avid fan's (usually) of Apple. They could at least put in the updatable play list feature.
Anyway, i'm finished ranting, back to work.

i agree with dave. I think the ram would only help with making a running playlist, the games should still work with the old ones because they already have one game working. The games should be the same as the breakout, not having to run on a lot of ram. i think they could probably some how update the old ones but don't want to.

Even if they could, would it be cost effective? Would you send your old iPod to them and tell them to upgrade it for $200?

i don't think you would have to send them your ipod. There are still g3 machines running os X, people just update the software side. all they would have to do is put the games online for download. i am surprised no one has figured out how to develop more games for it.

You're comparing bananas and oranges here. You cannot compare a G3/OS X to an iPod's games. The processor they they use could be completely different. The other bits of hardware/architechture could be completely different. The "OS" running on the newer iPod and the way it interacts with the architecture could be completely different.

apples and bananas may taste different, but they are both fruit ... ipods and g3's are all made of the same kinds of technology (hard drive, memory, cpu). if the games work on the new ipods, then if the hardware is a lot different from the old ipods all they would have to do is recompile or rewrite the software to work with the old ipods. anything is possible!

I understand that, which gets me back to my earlier point, is it cost effective to pay a programmer $n/hr to sit and re-rewrite all their software for use on the older iPods? Naturally they want people to buy new iPods.

well, it's not cost effective, but that's why i say i am surprised no one has developed games for the old one. i am sure people could write their own freeware for the old ones.

but where would the fun be in figuring something out if it were simple, that's why we are all here. to figure things out...
