ipod opinion

i am looking for people's opinions about a 30 gb ipod i just got back from apple service.

i purchased my 30gb ipod the day they were announced back in april. recently, i have been having a lot of trouble with it and decided to take advantage of my warranty. i have to mention that, i have tried to keep my ipod scratch free, since it cost me over $500 bucks. maybe i'm crazy...

i received the ipod back from service today and there are scratches all over the white surface and screen. i don't know what to do and if i can do anything about this. this really pisses me off, especially since they will give me a hard time.

am i being to anal? should i be happy that it now works and not care so much about the scratches apple made? i really want to call them, but don't know if it will be a big waste of time.

any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

thanks

Look closesly at your ipod. They come apart in a very strange way. I repair computers for a living, and in my experience some of the smaller things including laptops will get some minor scratches while repairing them. Those things snap apart in some places with plastic pieces. You have to wedge some kind of either flat plastic tool or small flat head screw driver to pop them apart. I just got done earlier today replacing a HD in a 600Mhz ibook. I don't know if you have ever taken one apart, but its quite a chore. I have been doing this for a while now, and when I was a n00b at it, I will admit I did scratch a few things here and there. The ibook I worked on today I did not scratch once on the outside, but thats probably because its not my first time ever doing it. Apple plastics scratch kinda easily especially the new ones that are white.

More than likely the tech who worked on it is new to the ipod, or maybe he was real hung over. I take great care of my electronics as you do. I just recently got a new ibook a few months ago, and even though I am extremely careful with it. I have noticed a few very minor very small surface scratches on the bottom of it.

The fact that it came back from service that way for warranty work, I would be upset as well. I would call apple and complain. Apple is very anal when it comes to quality control (trust me I work for an AASP) so they should expect the same from their customer's when they screw up. I don't know about you but $500 is a lot of money for something like an ipod. So I would expect to get what I pay for, along with apple's service.

I also got an ipod...I've got it since about feb. last year...at first I took real good care for it, but now it's all full of scratches and stuff..

It had fallen out of my pocket more then once while skating and stuff....the good thing about that is that now I don't have to care about the scratches all the time anymore. It's full of them! =))

But it worx well...so...as long as it worx I don't really care about the case.

contacted apple

so, i contacted apple customer service today and they are supposed to get back to me before the end of the day today.

i was told, by one of the people i talked to there, that they are replacing broken ipods, rather than repairing them, but this is not the case with mine... same serial, same ipod! it appears that they just restored it with v2.0.1.

the service agent wanted me to take a picture and email it, but the scratches don't show up in the digital photo!

this ipod never really came out of it's case and i know it will scratch over time, but it really annoys me that apple didn't handle it with the care i would expect them too.

in my experience with apple service, this has happended to me before with my $4,000, 22 inch cinema display when the backlight went out a couple of years ago. it really depends on who you talk to there.

maybe i'm overreacting, but i spend a lot of money on apple products and baby all of my hardware!!!

I agree if you are gonna drop that kind of cash on a product I would expect good service. Not to mention apple is suppose to have great service that is one of their selling points. I work for an AASP, and all iPods are RMA, we don't do any repairs in house. I will say that I have never really seen or heard of an ipod that comes back in worse condition when we shipped it out.

So no you are not over reacting (unless you are screaming and going crazy, but it seems you are not that irate) and I think you should get your item you sent to apple in the same condition as you sent it in.

my $.02
