iTunes and Manually updating iPod

I'm a mac newbie. Beware.

I have iTunes 4 and a 5 gig original iPod.

I want to have iTunes automatically update my ipod, but I have a lot more music than 5 gig so, itunes says it's a no-go. So I set it to automatically update checked songs, which I like quite a lot. I just check a song, and it gets updated when I connect the ipod.

The problem is that iTunes won't play songs that aren't checked, so I essentially only hear music that's on my ipod, when sitting in front of all my music. What's the most elegent way to keep my ipod updated, while listening to all my music?

I'd say the easiest thing would be to chose to auto-update a few playlists and keep all of the songs you want on your iPod in those playlists.
