outdated hints help

a friend asked about uninstalling foreign languages in panther. i searched here and found a thread. then I saw the thread referred to tsch and vaguely recalled or wondered if Panther has changed default shells. That raised the bigger question in my mind, "will anyone be going back to look for dangerous hints that will cause problems for people with Panther?" and remove them or notate them? Are there terminal tweaks that will save a Jaguar butt but bust a Panther butt badly? Has the shell or other foundation(s) changed in such a way that some old hints are now dangerous? Inquiring minds want to know.

The shell for users who already existed before an upgrade to Panther is still tcsh.

Anybody who does do regression testing of hints should make a point of informing Rob about it if something breaks. I seriously doubt that he will have the chance to do a lot of it, what with being a new dad and all. But I'm sure the entire community would welcome the knowledge.

P.S. - in answer to your friend's question Monolingual is an excellent choice for removing the unwanted language files, and works with 10.1, 10.2 and 10.3. I just ran it recently because even after installing Panther with just one language, many of the applications still have the unwanted .lproj files.

The comment system is the best means of noting problems with older hints. Given that I'm one person, there's no way I can even come close to testing a small percentage of the older hints. But if you see one that you think might cause a problem, post a comment to the hint noting that fact.

The other alternative, of course, is to turn off the database for old hints each time there's an upgrade, but that seems like a draconian solution -- after all, there are still people running 10.1 and 10.2 today.
