Question Always view Mail image attachments "as icon"?

Is there a way to always view image attachments as an icon, as opposed to in-line? (I know that you can control-click the image and select "view as icon," but I'd rather set this as the default behavior.)

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

No Solution?

I too have been seriously annoyed by this "feature". As far as I can tell, there is NO way to turn off the inline attachments.

As Jbeek notes, I think you're out of luck. I was seriously annoyed enough with Mail's insistence on showing me html and images that I didn't want to see (along with it's insistence that I connect to the Internet to check my local mail spool, when there's a working mail server on the machine) that I dumped Mail altogether.

I finally went with Gyazmail. It lets you decide which MIME parts you want to always view as attachments, and with a press of the I, H, or M keys, you can view the images, html, or entire message content when you want. Not everyone's cup of tea (doesn't support IMAP yet), but it's very fast and reasonably priced at $18.

Mailsmith ($100), Powermail ($50), and Eudora ($?) are some other possible alternatives if you get sufficiently frustrated with Mail. Each has their proponents and good points. If you're looking for free clients, you might want to look at GNUmail; it's not as powerful as Mail, but gives you a different set of options for viewing your email.

Mail.app
10.4.2

Is it still not possible to set "view as icon" as a default?
