The forums have a pretty large Search Page.

Or you could consider reducing your screen resolution to increase size at the expense of on-screen real estate.

Seriously, I think giving the search button a little more prominence and size is a good idea. It wouldn't hurt to have the search field up there as well. Lots of sites do that.

Putting a search box on the page itself would require some work ... I'm not saying it's not a good idea, just that I'm not sure exactly how much work is required -- I'll have to dig through the vBulletin code to see how they build their search box, and then try to replicate that on the homepage.

Regarding making it bigger, again I agree in principle but I'd also then have to probably make all the buttons bigger, and that might then require a different layout for the header.

All good ideas; I'm just not sure when I'll be able to get to them...
