Download destination folder

I’ve noticed that the Mac automatically downloads and unzips everything to the desktop, without prompting me for a preferred location– so a Mac session involves repeated cleanups of the newly cluttered desktop. Somewhere there is an option to force a specific folder – does anyone know where that is?

Sure! Open Safari, go to preferences. The General tab has a variety of settings, some of which are system-wide. Change your download folder there, and most other browsers will also save to that download folder. Some exceptions, like IE, but each normally has download settings that can be set to the same folder. This is also a place where you can change the Default web browser. (some software has links that are hard-coded to IE, I guess, so YMMV)

(BTW- you can change the prefs in Stuffit Expander, so any intermediate un-stuffed files are deleted automatically, including the original download )

Check out the browser you are using for your downloads.

Go to its preferences. It's preferences should allow you choose a specific browser "download dump location" for dumping all the downloaded files that your browser brings down.

And then, in Stuffit Expander preferences, you can set Stuffit Expander to watch that browser download dump location in order for Stuffit to do its work at that location.

And, as well, set Stuffit Expander preferences to dump its work at that browser download dump location into a specified Expander location.

I put a "Downloads" folder on my desktop (for the browser to empty its downloads to) and as well an "Expander" folder on my desktop (for Stuffit, in doing its work at that Downloads folder, to dump into.)

This is tolerably neat housekeeping, and I always know where all the downloads go and were all the Stuffit modifications of the downloads go. And everything is in two folders on the desktop--rather than having a littered desktop.

Tastes differ. But check out the ones indicated above. And then let us know your reactions.
