Hi all!
I am dumb. I cannot figure out whether or not I can have multiple playlists, whether I can delete songs from the On-the-go playlists, have multiple on-the-go playlists, and all the other new features of the iPod. Today I downloaded the iPod updater, and found out that I have the most up to date version of the software on it, version 2.2. Thing is, I do not remember updating this iPod within the last month or so, and I thought that this was a new software version. My mistake perhaps? I have a 10 Gb 3G iPod with the Dock connector, model M8976LL. Thanks for any help that you can offer. |

the iPod updater that can be donwloaded now is pretty much the same that has been available for several months, but with the software for the 4G iPod added. Won't affect your 3G if that's already updated. It doesn't add any of the 4G functions to earlier iPods. The last update was to provide better performance with iTunes, I think.

So this means none of us get the better (I think) new 4G iPod menu that has the "Music" and "Shuffle Songs" options from the main menu?

Think of it this way - If you were able to update your 3G iPod such that it had all the [software] features of the 4G, there would be little incentive for you to buy the 4G, and thus Apple would be wasting their time by producing it. Sad, but true (although I'm led to believe the new 'shuffle' feature isn't all that it's cracked up to be).
To be honest, the best thing I can see about the new 4G 'pods is the US$100 price drop, (admittedly I've never used the new click-wheel, so I can't comment on how much of an improvement it is over the touch wheel - on paper, it appears to be quite convenient). |

3g vs 4g iPods software and clickwheel
I just bought a Gen3 20Gb iPod about a week before Apple announced the Gen4's. I bought it from the refurbished/previous generation section of Apple's site. I paid $249 for it, and still think I got a good deal. There may still be a few there. Last time I checked they had a 40Gb for $329!
Anyway I think the gen3 is a better model. I like the seperate controls - that is why I sold my gen 2 and bought the gen 3 - my gen 2 (a tough old 20Gb iPod) was great, but I really liked the newer ones, so I upgraded. But I don't think it is necessary! An iPod is an iPod - and none of them live up to their lofty battery expectations! if you must have more software for your pod, there are lots of shareware and freeware apps out there that add functionality. I have no intention of buying a Gen4 iPod - not until my gen 3 bites the dust. As far as the software barriers- that's typical for Apple (think OS 9 booting macs) - it is how they protect sales and quite understandable. I have paid for Apple products only to find lower prices on faster models a couple weeks later, and I understand that is just how business works. Everybody would simply wait to buy and Apple would languish in the interim. I bought a G3 iBook (900Mhz) less than a month before the G4s were announced. I bought a Titanium PowerBook G4 (1Ghz) less than 2 months before the 15" aluminum model was announced. I bought an iMac DV (500Mhz) a coupla years ago just before the flat panel iMacs were announced. I bought what I needed then, and I still use it all. Obselecence is a WHOLE other thread.... Peace!

Hehe, I got my 20GB 3G iPod about 2 weeks before the new ones came out. For $280, new in box off someone who won it but already had one.
Another thing about the lower price on the 4G iPods: they don't come with the dock, the case or the remote. Purchased separately, they add up to approximately the price of the comparable 3G iPods that came WITH that stuff.

The 40 gb model does come with a dock, the 20 gb doesn't.

the click wheel is the same as the one on the mini, which is very innovative and takes up less space. i still prefer the good 'ol 3rd Gen, though. the only thing i would have liked to have is the longer battery life and a 100 dollars less. but rusto also makes a good point with what they give you in the new "remixed" iPods- my 3G came with the remote control, the case, and the dock. too the rest of the computer world, they'll just look at the $100 dollar decrease, battery life increase, and new click wheel and pull 300 (or 400) bucks outa their wallet and buy an iPod, which Apple must be fine with.
