Are you talking about the main site, the forum site, or both?

For almost an hour today, I couldn't get to the forums or main page. Maybe 4-5pm Pacific time?

(all is good now, obviously)

Hmmm, since they're on different servers (I think) we'll have to see if Rob says anything. I think he was doing an update to the Geeklog software sometime in here.

We're moving the sites (both the main site and the forum site) to a much faster server tonight (hopefully).

This should greatly help the problem; it's not only a faster machine, it will not have as many sites, which will also help.

I've been hitting both sites pretty regularly the last week or so, and haven't noticed any delays that made the pages unreachable. The main hints site sometimes took 30 seconds to load, but that was about it.

The new Geeklog (macosxhints.com engine) upgrade will happen in the next few weeks; I'm not sure if it will help the speed; there are a few less tables to render, so that's a start. The SQL queries have also been cleaned up quite a bit. The root of the problem, though, is demand. There are so many people trying to hit the main site, it just gets slow ... we're looking into some caching solutions which may help as well, but they have to wait until after the server and Geeklog upgrades are done.

OK, we're on the new box now ... speed seems to have increased, um, dramatically :-).

Thanks for bearing with us through the upgrade.
