Using HP LJ-1012 with Windows and MAC X

1012 printer is connected to W2000 PC.

G4 MAC X is on the same network.

Trying to confugure access to remote 1012 in MAC X using driver provided by HP without success.

Help/ideas will be appreciated.

1. Buy an HP JetDirect card. http://www.hp.com/sbso/tpm/wired_jetdirect.html
2. Install it in the LaserJet 1012.
3. Plug the LaserJet 1012 into your network switch.
4. Print from any computer on your network.

Have you set the printer to be shared from windows? What happens when you try to add it on the mac as a windows printer, using print setup utility?

I'm not familiar with the particular HP printer you are using, but here are the general instructions for sharing a printer on a Windows PC with Mac's running Mac OS X 10.3 Panther on the same network:

On the Windows side, configure the PC to share the printer with the network. Consult Windows Help for details.

On the Mac side, configure your Mac to use the Windows shared printer using the instructions in the AppleCare Knowledge Base document “Mac OS X 10.3 Help: Setting Up to Print to a Printer Shared by a Windows Computer Via SMB.”

Finally... I bought this printer months ago to print over my wireless network from my Powerbook to my HP LaserJet 1012 connected to a windows machine. It only worked if I directly plugged in to the USB port rather than over the network. I hacked PPD files, drivers, etc... and finally found the magic resources

1) Go to http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/foomatic/. Download both the foomatic-RIP and the esp Ghostscript dmg files, mount them, and install the contents.

2) Go to http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...-LaserJet_1012. Next to "Recommended driver: pxl1010" click the "download PPD". Take the file and drop it into the folder /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj.

3) Open Print Center and click the "Add" button to add a new printer. I found the printer using "Windows Printing" and navigating to the machine (via the MSHOME workgroup.). Note: I believe navigating or logging in was broken in some versions of 10.3 but it works now with 10.3.8. Then, when you select the printer, select "HP" as your printer type and it will show you a list of a bunch of printers. Use the driver "HP LaserJet 1012 Foomatic/pxl1010 (recommended)"

That should be it and it should work (or at least it did for me). I'm trying to post these instructions in a few places because I've been trying to figure this out on and off for months.

I just wanted to confirm that these instructions worked well for me and I am now happily printing from my Mini to my shared HP 1012 printer on another Windows system.

I've used Rendezvous with success on Win XP, I'm not sure with Win 2000.

i'm having this same problem too. i choose Windows printing and can browse for the printer. but when i get to select the drivers from the drop down, it doesn't show up. i downloaded the software/driver from hp and installed it on my mac but it still doesn't appear on the driver drop down list. i'll try the other tips when i get home.

Well, that was the closest I came to getting this thing working with the Mac laptops (iBook G4 and PowerBook G4). Thanks for that! But I tried both the pxl1010 and hpijs PPDs with mixed results. I could get a page or two to print out, but I always get the following error somewhere in the middle of the printout:

I got just about that far also. When I printed, the printer would start like it was going to print, the lights would flash like it was receiving data, the print spool said it was printing, and then it would just sit there for up to 15 minutes (possibley more because I woluld cancel the print job) and I couldn't do a thing on the PC. When I checked the Task Manager it was registering the print spooler taking up to 99% of the processor power. Any Ideas?

Any luck with Tiger? When I try to print, everything acts like it is working on my Powerbook G4 but the printer never flashes or prints.

I've tried to get my HP Office jet printer, connected to my xp machine to work with my G4 Powerbook. I'm using wirelss, I can see the powerbooks folders..etc from my window machine, and can print from my mac to the printer, but when I print something, it comes out with all sorts of unrecognizable characters, letters that make no sense on the paper.

Is this because the driver is incorrect? I've not downloaded any HP print drivers for my G4 powerbook. Should I?

I just updated my MacBook to Leopard and my printer disappeared so I need to re-add the printer. It looks like the steps are different and you don't need to install foomatic any more. The directions are similar to step #3 in my original directions.

1) There's no more "Print Center". Go to "System Preferences" (formerly known as the Control Panel) and select "Print and Fax". Then click the plus to add a printer. Select "Windows" along the top and browse the network for your printer. Mine was in mshome. You may need to log-in to the machine with a user name and password.

2) Select "select driver to use" in the "Print Using:" dropdown and search for "1012" in the search box. Select the driver "HP LaserJet 1012 - Gutenprint v5.1.3".

That should do it. It's working for me.

Looks like I spoke too soon. It does work but this driver has a bug and won't print in landscape mode. I'll see if the old driver can be made to work with Leopard and post my results.

Argh. I went back and installed foomatic and ghostscript eps and the pxl1010 driver from http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...-LaserJet_1012 and guess what? It prints but it also won't print in landscape mode. Thus, maybe this is actually a bug further up the chain. I've reported the bug to apple and to the gutenprint people on Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index...37&atid=201537)

Update: It does print in landscape mode if the printer is directly attached to the USB port of my MacBook. It doesn't print in landscape mode if it's attached to a windows machine. So, the bug appears to be somewhere in the way that the commands come through windows printing. I'll report this to Apple.

Also, I notice that printing multiple copies doesn't work either, whether Windows attached or USB attached, gutenprint, pxl1010, or hpjis driver.

Im seeing the same problem on a G5 Tower running 10.5 printing to a Windows machine. Im unable to print landscape using the Gutenprint v5.1.3 driver to my HP6540 desk jet shared on a Windows XP machine. I have triple checked that Page Setup is showing the correct orientation button selected. The work around above including "Open PDF in Preview", rotating manually, and printing from Preview seems to work for now.

Additionally, the machine will not print pages in reverse order, something I use when printing several numbered checks at once without manually collating before I feed them into the printer.

Seems like there is a root problem in Page Setup and/or Print's Paper Handling drivers over a network to a Windows XP machine.
