Question befsr41

Hello ,
Please help, I'm having problem pointing my dyndns.org account to my computer. Instead it's pointing to my router and it seems like it stuck there. I want to be able to have my own webserver for my family & friends photo & mail. My router is linksys befsr41, I'm using dsl connection to share my connection with my other macs. Internet is not a problem the problem is that whenever I try to connect to my dyndns hostname it cannot work. I can see my IP number on the status bar but that's about it. I want to try the free service first see if it works, then later I will probably get my own domain. There is an advance port connection on the router itself but I don't know how to like forward my DHCP number to my own computer. By the way I'm using panther 10.3.5. Also linksys router is got a dyndns.org stuff built-in but when I set it up, it keeps saying the host name does not exist. Thanks in advance for any reply or suggestions. Any suggestions is better that nothing. I'm not very knowlegeble about the router setup.

The dyndns must be configured for your router's IP address. Your Mac's internal private address 192.168.1.2 (for example) is not available to the outside world, so if that is what you're trying to point dyndns at, it's not going to work. Point dyncdns at your router and then configure your router to forwards those ports that you need to your Mac..

If you want to open ports to your Mac on the router, you must first set your Mac up to use a Static address with the router. Just set the Ethernet settings of the Network Prefs Pane to the following:
Configure IPv4: Manually
IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.1.1
Now, depending on what you want to share from your Mac, you will first want to enable it in the Sharing Prefs Pane. Then go to the Firewall portion (Don't turn it on!) and note the port addresses that feature requires. Go to your Linksys Control Panel in Safari at address http://192.168.1.1/, Click the Status tab and write down the WAN IP Address. This will be the address of your Mac. Click the 'Advanced' tab, followed by 'Port Forwarding.' Enter the port(s) you need to forward and '2' to indicate your Mac. IE:

For Personal Filesharing:
427 to 427 UDP 192.168.1. 2
548 to 548 UDP 192.168.1. 2
For FTP Access:
20 to 21 BOTH 192.168.1. 2
1024 to 65535 UDP 192.168.1. 2
This should be enough to get you started. Use the IP Address you wrote down to access your computer from outside of your local network. If you do have additional computers connected to the Linksys (It supports up to 127 devices!), you can access them with the local address, 192.168.1.2.

I use DynDNS.org's Custom DNS service with my own registered domain. I too have never been able to get my Linksys router (WRT54G) working with the Linksys settings - but it may be because I'm using Custom DNS instead of their regular service, not sure.

I use a program called DNSUpdate , a client that makes sure my domain is pointing to the right IP.

Red face

First of all I want to thank all for your input. Here is what is going on right now. Went to dyndns.org and register a host name. after all that is done, the host name auto read my IP number and so I went and set that number so it's pointing ot it I think. Then I went to my linksys router befsr41 and check all the configuration. Here is the basic setup on the first window. (note: the ip is not real ofcourse)

(indent)Here is the set up: (/indent)

(indent)Ip: (b)202.128.22.120(/b)
Subnet Mask: (b)255.255.255.224(/b)
Default Gateway: (b)202.128.22.119(/b)
Primary DNS: (b)202.128.34.61(/b)
Secondary DNS: (b)202.128.24.62(/b)(/indent)

(indent)Optional setting:
Hostname: blank
Domain Name: blank
MTU: disable(/indent)

(indent)Network Setup:
Local IP address: (b)192.168.1.1(/b)
Subnet Mask: (b)255.255.255.0(/b)
Local DHCP Server: (b)Enable(/b)
Start IP address: (b)192.168.1.100(/b)
Number of Address: (b)50(/b)
DHCP Address Range: (b)192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149(b)(/indent)

(indent)Now this setting is working on my panther 10.3.5 using DHCP setting. I can connect to the internet and share the connection to my 2 macs and 1 pc. Now here is the next thing that I did since I'm wanting webserver for family & friends. I went back to the routers other tabs and setting. I went to tabs called " advance routing" Here is the window setup where I don't know what to do.(/indent)

Advance routing:

(indent)Nat: enable
dynamic routing- transmit rip version: disable
- receive rip version: disable (/indent)

(indent)Static Routing: (/indent)

(indent)Destination IP : don't know
Subnet Mask: (b)255.255.255.0(/b)
Gateway: Igot gateway from IP but I don't know if it's for here
Hop Count: I don't know
Interface: You can choose either lan or internet I don't know which one.(/indent)

(indent)Next is I went to another tabs of linksys called "DDNS"(/indent)

(indent)Here is the Setting: (/indent)

(indent)DDNS Serveices: I select "dyndns.org" since it's built-into it(/indent)
(indent)User: my dns account
password: my dns password
Host name: I enter my host name I created from dyndns.org
Internet IP: It auto read my IP address 202.128.22.120
Status: It says that hostname does not exist eventhough I'm online (/indent)

I decided to try the suggestion from Las_Vegas, It's either I'm really stupid or my brain is to small to absorb the suggestion. Hopefully this is detailed enough according to my knowledge so the problem can be solve. Thanks in advance, I also want to thank this forum it's really nice that you can find other people that's having other problems and try to solve it and also sharing ideas and fixing problems. Thanks for everybody's input.

Port Forwarding will not work properly on the Linksys BEFSR41 unless the target computer is set to a Static (Manual) Address.
