Changing default col width in "column view"

RE: Finder
Can the "default" width of the columns in "column view" be changed so I don't have to manually make them wider all the time???

I believe if you make changes to the size or position of the elements of a new Finder window without navigating to any file, folder, or device, then close the window, those settings will be retained in the next new Finder window you open.

So switch to the Finder, open a new window, make changes to the width of the columns, then close the window. Opening a new window in column view should reflect the changes you made. I'm not sure if it matters if there are other open Finder windows when you do this.

In Mac OS 10.4 the default width of the Finder's columns can be changed by option-dragging the column handle to your preferred width. When you close the Finder window and open a new one it will open with the columns sized as you indicated.

I would also like to thank Mariohendricks, as my columns had suddenly become very wide and I couldn't figure out how to restore them to a more manageable width. Your post is still helping people nearly two years on.

Thanks
Duff
