Gimp.app and Tiger
I've just installed Gimp-2.2.6 (gimp.app version) on my Mac OS X Tiger install and it won't open.
When I click on the Gimp icon in the dock it starts bouncing and then apple's X11 opens fine, but the Gimp icon stops bouncing and Gimp does not open. It worked fine with Panther. Has anybody else had this problem and if so is there a way to fix this? Many thanks Jason

Does anything appear on the screen? When I tried to launch Gimp.app in Tiger the first time, a block of color appeared where the Gimp startup graphic should be, but then the startup appeared to hang. After trying unsuccessfully to get it started several times, I got distracted and let it hang while I did something else. After at least five minutes, Gimp suddenly started up. On a hunch, I closed it and re-opened, and sure enough there was no problem. The process was repeated on my wife's account: at least five minutes to launch the first time, no problem after that.
So I guess my advice to you would be to let it sit for a good long while and see if it fixes itself. ------RM |

i seem to recall that i had a similar problem. what name have you given your harddrive/folder. for some reason, i think there's a problem with nonstandard ascii characters (i had mine labeled '12" Powerbook' ).
just a vague recollection. darin [edit]i don't know if this applies, but here's the bit from the read me: There is a bug currently that Gimp.app will not work from within a folder containing any of the following characters: pipe |, forward slash /, backslash \, ampersand &, pound #, or double quote ". Any other printable characters should be fine. [/edit] Last edited by dhayton; 06-03-2005 at 07:06 PM. |

The white space where the splash screen should be for approximately five minutes during start up with Gimp.app has been happening to me since Panther. I've written on the developer's message boards at Sourceforge about it, and reproduced the behavior on three different machines. Maybe you could chime in as well.
Biggest thing I noticed since Tiger is the inability to print; otherwise Gimp.app has been fine. |

My hardrive label is the OS X default (Macintosh HD).
I don't get anything like it hanging. The bouncing icon in the dock just stops. I tried opening Gimp again with the Console.log open to see any errors. This is what I got: The domain/default pair of (.GlobalPreferences, AppleCollationOrder) does not exist No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig library is not correctly configured. You may need to edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual page and on http://fontconfig.org I don't know if this means anything to anybody? Thanks for the help

Here is a solution for you
As described here, it is a fontconfig issue.
http://www.holoweb.net/~liam/fonts/ When logged in as user root, run the following command in a Terminal fc-cache -f -v If your root account is not enabled (as on most OS X systems) use sudo fc-cache -f -v This should work when typed into a Terminal application. It will take a while to complete. You can use Spotlight to locate the Terminal application. After that procedure, Gimp.app started to work for me! Christian |

I was dealing with the identical problem and console message recently. I solved the problem after making some changes which may have effected the font configuration. I'm pretty sure not all of these could have an effect, but to be thourough, I'll list them.
1. Installed the Developer Tools 2. Installed Fink 3. Installed tetex distribution using fink 4. Installed package named 'applesystemfonts" using fink Of course, I shut down and restart fink after each stage, hoping the problem would solve itself, which it didn't. I then noticed a file at ~/.fonts.cache-1 I deleted that file (it was three lines, but I can't remember exactly what they were). Upon restarting X11, Gimp started properly! Hope this helps someone...
