Keyboard Problems

My wife has a 800 Mhz G4 IMAC with an apple keyboard.

When I plug her keyboard into another computer it all works fine. When I plug it directly into her IMAC the numbers above the letters work — the numbers on the number pad do not. When we use them they freeze whatever program she is in. The symbols on the number pad work, it is only the numbers that will not. We have not spilled anything on the keyboard. One day the numbers would not work. Other keyboards will not work they have the same difficulty.

I there a solution? Can you help? Please?

Blessings

Create a new user. Does the problem continue in the new user?

It is obviously not a problem with the keyboard, since it works fine on other machines. And you haven't had any French Dip spill on it, either. So, the problem has to be with the Mac. You should probably start with resetting PRAM and NVRAM, or resetting Open Firmware to its defaults. I doubt that this is a very serious, although obviously a very annoying, problem, so I think the solution is likely to be fairly easy. I'm not entirely certain if there is a keyboard preferences file, but it seems likely that there is (and someone on this forum will know exactly where it is!), I'd suggest removing it and letting the system generat a new one.

It could be your keyboard layout file. Try changing to the Unicode version of your keyboard in the International preferences. If that cures it, you may need to reinstall the /System/Library/Keyboard Layouts/Roman.bundle file from another Mac or your Mac OS X install disc.

Thank you all for your help!

I tried the bundle file, PRAM, everything suggested. Nothing different except New User worked!!!

Now, how do I get the number pad to work with the Admin User.

Blessings for your help ...

Try disposing of 'com.apple.universalaccess.plist' and 'com.apple.systempreferences.plist' from the ~/Library/Preferences folder (~ = the account's home folder.).
